Koganezaki Furofushi Onsen

Ogonzaki Furofushi Onsen is a hot spring inn located at the scenic Ogonzaki in Fukura Town, Aomori Prefecture, at the foot of the World Heritage Site, Shirakami-Sanchi. The open-air baths, integrated with the sea, provide a refreshing experience, and especially at sunset, guests can enjoy a breathtaking view of the vibrant red sun sinking on the horizon. It is highly recommended to stay overnight to fully appreciate this sunset. All four baths feature 100% natural hot spring water, rich in iron, giving the water a deep brown color. This hot water is known for thoroughly warming the body and for its resistance to cooling down, earning it the name "Heat No Yu." Additionally, it is said to have skin beautifying and antibacterial effects. During dinner, guests can savor fresh seafood caught from nearby waters. The name Furofushi comes from the legend that one does not age or weaken through the care provided here. For access, the recommended option is the sightseeing train "Resort Shirakami." There is also a shuttle bus available from the nearest station, "Wespa Tsubakiyama Station."

Detailed Information

Koganezaki Furofushi Onsen is a hot spring inn in Fukaura Town, Aomori Prefecture, located at the foot of the Shirakami Mountains, a World Natural Heritage site, and renowned for its spectacular scenery. Built on the seashore of “Koganezaki,” said to have been named because the cliff face turns golden at sunset, its greatest appeal is its magnificent location overlooking the setting sun over the Sea of Japan.

A one-of-a-kind view enjoyed from the open-air bath by the waves
The signature feature of Furofushi Onsen is its open-air bath right by the waves, set astonishingly close to the sea—only about one meter away. Surrounded by an extraordinary sense of openness as sky, sea, and hot spring seem to become one, it offers a blissful experience unlike anything in everyday life.

Especially recommended is the evening hour, when the deep red sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Soaking in the bath while gazing at the breathtaking view of the sky and sea turning golden is truly the ultimate luxury.

The open-air baths include a gourd-shaped mixed-gender tub and a round women-only tub. In addition, there are separate indoor baths for men and women, and all baths are 100% natural free-flowing hot spring water direct from the source.

A rich dark-brown “hot spring of warmth” that keeps you warm for a long time
The hot spring gushes forth at an abundant rate of about 400 liters per minute, and its defining feature is its deep dark-brown water rich in iron and salt. This distinctive color is created as the iron in the water oxidizes upon exposure to air, giving the spring such浓厚 density that the bottom cannot be seen.

Because it warms the body thoroughly from within and is difficult to cool down after bathing, it is known as the “hot spring of warmth.” It is also said to help healing thanks to its antibacterial properties, earning it the reputation of being a “healing spring for wounds” and a “beauty spring” that leaves the skin smooth. The appeal of its water quality is one of the reasons so many people are drawn here.

The origin of “Furofushi” and a moving experience unique to staying overnight
The name “Furofushi Onsen” carries the wish that “if one recuperates here, one will not grow old or weaken.” Long cherished as a therapeutic hot spring resort, this area offers the healing power to restore both mind and body and to face the grandeur of nature.

Day-use bathing is also available, but the reception for the outdoor bath closes at 3:30 p.m. (for the indoor bath, summer hours are until 7:30 p.m. and winter hours until 6:30 p.m.). For those who wish to enjoy bathing while watching the sun set into the sea, an overnight stay is highly recommended.

Dinner featuring fresh seafood, and ocean-view rooms in every guestroom
Fukaura Town has long been known as a fishing town, and dinner features abundant fresh seafood sourced from local fishing masters. Dishes made with seasonal ingredients are served, allowing guests to savor the bounty of the sea with all five senses.

All guest rooms face the Sea of Japan, offering sweeping views of the vast ocean and the setting sun. With the sound of the waves as background music, guests can enjoy a relaxed stay wrapped in extraordinary calm and healing.

Access information
The most convenient way to get here is by taking the JR Gono Line sightseeing train “Resort Shirakami.” A shuttle bus for overnight guests also operates from the nearest station, Wespa Tsubakiyama Station. Why not make the most of a special journey combining spectacular scenery, hot springs, and gourmet cuisine, together with a train ride?
