Detailed Information
The Hakkoda Ropeway is a sightseeing ropeway located in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture, where visitors can enjoy the magnificent natural beauty of the Hakkoda mountain range from the air. Since opening in October 1968, it has shared the ever-changing beauty of Hakkoda’s nature throughout the four seasons with countless visitors.
A popular spot for spectacular scenery in every season
This ropeway offers a close-up view of nature’s changing expressions throughout the year.
In spring (around mid-May), the fresh green beech leaves vividly color the mountainsides, making it the perfect season for mountain walks in the crisp, refreshing air.
In summer, the cool mountaintop climate and alpine plants blooming in the wetlands are the main attractions. The area is bustling with people enjoying plant observation and light mountain hiking.
In autumn (late September to mid-October), maples and rowan trees turn beautifully red and gold, attracting many tourists as one of Hakkoda’s most famous foliage destinations.
In winter (January to late February), rime ice forms on the Aomori Todomatsu fir trees, creating the “juhyo” or “snow monsters,” and a fantastical snowy landscape spreads out before you.
From late November to mid-May, the area is also a ski and snowboard season. In particular, the approximately 5 km downhill course winding through the juhyo is immensely popular with ski fans from all over Japan.
Ropeway operation and access
The Hakkoda Ropeway operates year-round and connects the foot station at an elevation of about 650 meters to the Tamoyachidake Summit Park Station at an elevation of 1,324 meters in about 10 minutes one way.
From inside the gondola, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. On clear days, you may be able to see not only the sea of trees below, but also Aomori City, Mutsu Bay, the Tsugaru Peninsula, the Shimokita Peninsula, and even Mount Iwaki and the mountain ranges of the Oshima Peninsula in Hokkaido.
It is also conveniently accessible, about 40 minutes by car from central Aomori City, making it an ideal base for sightseeing, mountain climbing, and winter sports.
Things to enjoy in the summit area
Around Summit Park Station, the nature-rich Tamoyachi Marsh spreads out, dotted with more than 10 ponds and marshes of various sizes. It is also known as a treasure trove of alpine plants, attracting many plant enthusiasts, especially in summer.
Well-maintained walking trails offer several courses to choose from depending on your fitness level and purpose:
The “Gourd Line” (a naturally shaped walking path), about 30 minutes
A walking route of about 60 minutes
A full-scale mountain climbing course of about 4 hours (toward Sukayu Onsen)
All of these courses are enjoyable for beginners and advanced hikers alike, making them popular with people of all ages.
From the summit, it is also possible to traverse via the “Kenashi Paradise Line” (about 2 hours 30 minutes) or the “Mt. Odake climbing course” (about 4 hours) to the historic and famous Sukayu Onsen hot spring. *As these are general hiking trails, proper equipment such as sneakers or hiking boots is required.
Limited-time events: “Sunset” and “Stargazing” Ropeway
From summer to autumn, special operation events are held:
“Sunset Ropeway” (around mid-August)
“Stargazing Ropeway” (mid- to late September)
During these periods, operating hours are extended by 2 to 3 hours beyond the usual schedule, allowing visitors to enjoy beautiful sunsets sinking below the horizon and a sky full of stars in the clear night sky from the summit. It is a romantic experience that is especially popular with couples and photography enthusiasts.
The Hakkoda Ropeway is one of Aomori Prefecture’s most spectacular destinations, offering seasonal enjoyment through sightseeing, mountain climbing, skiing, and stargazing. Surrounded by the beauty of nature, we invite you to experience a refreshing aerial walk through Hakkoda that will rejuvenate both mind and body.
