Oasis 21

Oasis 21

Oasis 21 is a multifunctional complex that opened in 2002 in the Sakae area of Nagoya City. Its centerpiece is the glass roof known as the "Water Spaceship," which floats 14 meters above ground. Water flows across this roof, creating beautiful ripples. Visitors can enjoy this scenery while walking along the 200-meter-long aerial walkway.

Oasis 21 is also characterized by its eco-friendly design. The water on the roof helps to reduce heat during the summer, and the facility utilizes rainwater and well water, as well as green space on artificial ground, to mitigate the urban heat island effect.

The complex also features a park area known as the "Green Earth," providing a space for locals and tourists to relax. It is home to seasonal flowers and trees, creating a pleasant green environment.

Beneath the facility is the "Galaxy Square," an area rich in shopping, dining, and event spaces. Various events are held on weekends, attracting many visitors.

Convenient transportation options are available, including a bus terminal served by Nagoya City buses, Meitetsu buses, and Mikawa buses. It is also directly connected to Sakae Subway Station and Meitetsu Sakaemachi Station, making access to and from Nagoya City and its surroundings easy.

Oasis 21 serves as a new landmark in Nagoya City, offering a multifaceted experience from shopping and recreation to ecology.

Detailed Information

Oasis 21 is a multifunctional complex that opened in 2002 in the Sakae area of Naka Ward, Nagoya City. Developed as a three-dimensional park combining multiple functions such as a park, shopping, dining, events, and a transportation hub, it is cherished as one of Nagoya’s most iconic landmarks. Located near the Aichi Arts Center and NHK Nagoya Broadcasting Center, it is widely used not only by tourists but also in the daily lives of local residents.

Symbol of Oasis 21: the “Spaceship-Aqua” and the Skywalk
The defining feature of Oasis 21 is the glass roof known as the “Spaceship-Aqua,” which floats about 14 meters above ground. Designed to resemble a spaceship suspended in the sky, this roof holds a layer of water that creates beautiful rippling patterns as the light changes.
Around the roof runs a skywalk approximately 200 meters in circumference, accessible by elevator or stairs for a pleasant stroll. One of its major attractions is the chance to enjoy a walk in the air while taking in views of the Sakae cityscape and the surrounding area from a height of 14 meters.
At night, the roof is illuminated, and seasonal displays as well as special limited-time light-ups create a magical atmosphere different from the daytime. Together with the night view of Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER (Nagoya TV Tower), it has become a popular photogenic spot.

Eco-friendly design with environmental consideration
Oasis 21 is notable not only for its beauty but also for its environmental awareness. The water on the “Spaceship-Aqua” helps reduce radiant heat from direct summer sunlight and suppresses the rise in temperature in the underground space.
In addition, the use of rainwater and well water, along with greenery on the artificial ground, helps mitigate the urban heat island effect common in city centers. Despite being in the heart of the city, it is designed as a sustainable facility that coexists with nature.

Ground-level park: “Green Earth”
Beneath the “Spaceship-Aqua” lies the ground-level park “Green Earth,” centered around a lawn plaza. Gentle grassy slopes and a variety of plantings have been arranged, creating a relaxing space where visitors can take a break from the bustle of the city.
Benches are placed throughout the park, making it suitable for resting, meeting up, or taking a leisurely walk. Another charm of this park is the changing appearance of the plants with each season.

Underground space “Galaxy Square” and shops and restaurants
Below ground, the open atrium-style “Galaxy Square” extends beneath the park. Around 30 shops and restaurants line this area, offering opportunities for shopping and dining.
Restaurants serving Nagoya specialties, as well as antenna shops selling vegetables and processed foods from Aichi Prefecture and local sake, make it an ideal place to choose souvenirs. There are also character shops featuring anime and manga, making it popular with a wide range of age groups.
In addition, a variety of events are often held at “Galaxy Square,” especially on weekends, drawing many visitors with music events, exhibitions, and seasonal festivities.

A transportation hub
Oasis 21 is also highly convenient as a transportation center. It is directly connected to Sakae Subway Station and Sakaemachi Station on the Meitetsu Line, making access to various parts of Nagoya extremely easy.
It also includes a bus terminal served by Nagoya City Bus, Meitetsu Bus, Sanco Bus, JR Tokai Bus, and others, allowing use of both local routes and long-distance highway buses. The ability to shop or relax inside the facility while waiting for a bus is another appealing point for users.

Oasis 21 is a three-dimensional park where water and greenery come together around the “Spaceship-Aqua,” a true urban oasis where relaxation, liveliness, and human connection gather. By integrating the soothing atmosphere of a park with shopping, gourmet dining, events, and transportation functions, it has become a beloved destination for both tourists and local residents.
