Toki no Kane (Bell of Time)

Toki no Kane (Bell of Time)

The symbol of Kawagoe, the "Toki no Kane" (Bell of Time), is a historic bell tower that rises above the town's traditional warehouse-style buildings. It was founded about 400 years ago by the lord of Kawagoe, Sakai Tadakatsu, and was rebuilt several times throughout the Edo period. The current bell tower, reconstructed after the Great Kawagoe Fire in the 26th year of the Meiji era, stands at approximately 16 meters tall and features a three-story wooden structure. The bell tolls four times a day (at 6 AM, noon, 3 PM, and 6 PM), adding charm to the historic streets. Its chime was recognized in 1996 as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan to Preserve," making it beloved by both tourists and local residents.
