Meisho Sengannen
Sengan-en is a villa built by Shimizu clan's 19th generation leader, Mitsuhisa, in the first year of Manji (1658). It is a grand feudal lord's garden designed with Sakurajima as a hill and Kinko Bay as a pond. Visitors can appreciate seasonal flowers and plants while learning about the history and culture of the Shimazu family. The garden is dotted with noteworthy features such as crane lanterns, cat deities, and the Suzumon gate, all of which are considered to have high historical value. In 2015, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." The adjacent Shoko Shuseikan offers insights into the history of the Shimazu family and traditional crafts of Satsuma.
