Kirishima Shrine
Kirishima Shrine is a shrine located in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the central figure in the myth of the descent of the heavenly grandchildren. It was founded in the 6th century and was originally located in the Kirishima mountain range, but moved to its current location due to volcanic eruptions. The current main hall was built in 1715 by the Satsuma domain lord, Shimazu Yoshitaka, and it was designated as a National Treasure in 2022. The shrine grounds feature a magnificent vermilion-painted main hall, surrounded by beautiful scenery that changes with the seasons. A historical site, it was also visited by Sakamoto Ryoma and attracts many worshippers each year.
