Detailed Information
Tennoji Zoo is located within Tennoji Park in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City. Opened in Taisho 4 (1915), it is the third oldest zoo in Japan. Celebrating its 110th anniversary on January 1, Reiwa 7 (2025), the zoo houses about 1,000 animals of approximately 170 species across a site of around 11 hectares.
The zoo features “ecological exhibits” that recreate natural habitats as closely as possible, allowing visitors to observe animals living in environments similar to their own. Highlights include the “African Savannah Zone,” where lions and giraffes can be seen; “Penguin Park & Sea Lion Wharf,” where penguins and sea lions swim freely; “Aiver,” a reptile habitat for the near-threatened Japanese pond turtle; and “Bird World,” where visitors can observe birds up close. These diverse exhibits are among the zoo’s attractions.
Rare animals are also a major draw, including the drill, known for its distinctive black face and found nowhere else in Japan, and the kiwi, New Zealand’s national bird. In the bear house, home to polar bears, visitors can enjoy adorable behaviors such as jumping into the pool and playing with toys. Depending on the season, it may also be possible to see a polar bear parent and cub.
In the “Asian Tropical Rainforest Zone,” trees, rocks, and other elements recreate a forest environment, allowing visitors to observe animals living in a natural setting. The zoo also keeps Amur tigers, red pandas, guinea pigs, and one of Japan’s smallest horse breeds. The red pandas are especially popular, as visitors can watch them climb trees and play.
At the plaza where visitors can interact with animals, there are feeding experiences with sheep and goats, offering a precious opportunity to feel the importance and warmth of life. During the penguin “snack time,” visitors can also watch the penguins eating treats in a charming way.
In addition, the popular “Night ZOO” event is held in summer and autumn, offering the chance to see animals at night in ways not usually possible. The zoo normally closes at 5:00 p.m., but during the event period it stays open until 9:00 p.m., providing an excellent opportunity to observe nocturnal animals in depth. Since the schedule varies from year to year, it is recommended to check the official website before visiting.
Tennoji Zoo is a rare place in the middle of a city surrounded by skyscrapers, where visitors can connect with nature and the lives of animals. It is a charming urban zoo that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
