Tennoji Zoo

Tennoji Zoo opened in 1915 and will celebrate its 110th anniversary on January 1, 2025. Located in the heart of Osaka, the zoo spans approximately 11 hectares and is home to around 1,000 animals representing about 170 species. Its hallmark is the "ecological display," which recreates natural habitats, allowing visitors to see lions, giraffes, polar bears, and notably the drill, which is the only one exhibited in Japan as of 2025. Attractions such as "Ifer," "Penguin Park," and the bird area "Sekai" offer plenty to see, and seasonal events as well as the popular "Night ZOO," where visitors can encounter nocturnal animals, add to the zoo's appeal.

Detailed Information

Tennoji Zoo is located within Tennoji Park in the Tennoji district of Osaka City and opened in Taisho 4 (1915), making it Japan's third oldest zoo. As it approaches its 110th anniversary on January 1, Reiwa 7 (2025), the zoo houses around 1,000 animals of approximately 170 species within its roughly 11-hectare grounds.

The zoo features "ecological exhibits" that closely replicate the animals' natural habitats, allowing visitors to observe them living in conditions similar to the wild. Highlights include the "African Savannah Zone" with lions and giraffes, "Penguin Park & Seal Wharf" where penguins and sea lions swim freely, the reptile ecological facility "Ifer" that is home to the near-threatened Japanese pond turtle, and "Bird's World," where visitors can closely see various bird species in their habitats.

Among the rare animals to be found here are the "Drill," characterized by its pitch-black face, and the Kiwi, New Zealand's national bird. At the bear enclosure, visitors can enjoy watching the polar bears diving into the pool and playing with toys. During certain times, it’s also possible to see a mother polar bear with her cubs.

In the "Asian Tropical Rainforest Zone," the environment is recreated with trees and rocks, allowing for observation of animals living in their natural setting. The zoo is home to Amur tigers, red pandas, capybaras, and Japan's smallest horse, with the red pandas particularly popular for their playful climbing antics.

In an interactive area, guests can feed sheep and goats, providing a unique opportunity to feel the warmth and value of life. During "Snack Time" for the penguins, visitors can also watch the adorable sight of penguins eating treats.

Additionally, the popular event "Night ZOO" is held in the summer and autumn, allowing visitors to enjoy the nocturnal behaviors of animals that are not usually visible during the day. The zoo typically closes at 5 PM, but during the event period, it remains open until 9 PM, providing a great opportunity to observe nocturnal animals up close. The schedule for the event varies each year, so checking the official website before visiting is recommended.

Tennoji Zoo is a precious place in the heart of the city, surrounded by skyscrapers, where visitors can connect with nature and the lives of animals. It's a charming urban zoo that offers fun for children and adults alike.
