Detailed Information
Kuromon Market is an arcade shopping street located in Nipponbashi, Chuo Ward, Osaka, stretching approximately 580 meters. Known as "Osaka's Kitchen" or "Osaka's Stomach," it has been cherished for many years. About 150 shops line the street, offering a diverse range of products from fresh seafood, fruits, meats, dried goods, and processed foods to traditional Japanese sweets and desserts.
Its origins date back to the late Edo period when peddlers began trading fish in front of Enmyoji Temple in the vicinity. The market got its name "Kuromon" from the temple's black mountain gate. Although Enmyoji burned down during the Meiji era, the market was officially recognized by Osaka Prefecture in 1902 (the 35th year of Meiji) and developed into its current form.
During the Showa era, the market was bustling throughout the day with chefs visiting in the morning, housewives in the afternoon, and members of upscale restaurants in the evening. Particularly at the end of the year, the market becomes crowded with shoppers preparing for New Year’s celebrations, as it has become a common sight in Kansai for people seeking ingredients for fugu and osechi dishes.
In recent years, it has become a popular spot for foreign tourists as well, with eat-in and street food styles allowing visitors to enjoy fresh sushi, seafood bowls, tempura bowls, and skewered dishes right on the spot. Seasonal delicacies such as summer eel and winter fugu abound, and there are high-quality ingredients available, including specialized fugu shops frequented by professional chefs.
Additionally, the market provides information about stores, events, and recipes using seasonal ingredients through social media and its official website, adapting to modern needs with online sales and delivery services.
Access is also convenient, located just a short walk from Osaka Metro Nipponbashi Station, and features a covered arcade for shopping even in rainy weather. Loved by locals and tourists alike, Kuromon Market is a representative shopping street that supports Osaka’s food culture.
