Saigo Takamori Statue
The statue of Saigo Takamori, a great figure born in Kagoshima, stands proudly near the top of Shiroyama. Saigo is well-known as a prominent leader of the Meiji Restoration, but after returning to Kagoshima, he ultimately faced defeat in the Satsuma Rebellion and took his own life. This statue was created by the Kagoshima-born sculptor Teru Ando over eight years, completed in 1937. The statue itself stands at a height of 5.76 meters, with a total height of about 8 meters. It features a dignified appearance dressed in a general's military uniform. There is also a photo spot across the road where visitors can take pictures along with the statue of his beloved dog.
