Daichibanfudashoryozenji
The first temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage, Ryozenji Temple, was founded about 1300 years ago by the monk Gyoki, upon the imperial request of Emperor Shomu. It became the first of the 88 temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage because Kobo Daishi designated it as the starting point for the pilgrimage. The temple's main object of worship is the statue of the Buddha at the time of his birth, and through rituals, it is believed that one can purify the 88 delusions and pray for the establishment and achievement of the sacred site. In the Edo period, the temple was completely burned down in a fire, but it was later restored, and the main hall that was rebuilt in Showa 39 (1964) was renovated to commemorate the 1150th anniversary of the Shikoku pilgrimage. Today, it remains a deeply historical and spiritual site that attracts many pilgrims.
