Miwa Town Udattsu no Machinami
Wakimachi Udatsu Townscape is a precious historic district that features about 430 meters of buildings from the mid-Edo period to the early Showa period. Blessed with the water transport of the Yoshino River, this town prospered as a center for indigo distribution, and it is known for the "udatsu," or fireproof walls made of traditional tiles, which merchants built to showcase their family fortunes. This townscape was designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government in 1988. At night, lanterns are lit, allowing visitors to enjoy a fantastical atmosphere different from that of the daytime.
