Naruto Whirlpools

The Naruto Whirlpools are a world-famous natural phenomenon that occurs in the Naruto Strait between Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture and Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture. The currents in the Naruto Strait are considered one of the “world’s three great tidal currents,” alongside those in the Strait of Messina in Italy and the Seymour Narrows in Canada. During spring tides, the strait is known for producing some of the fastest tidal currents in Japan. The enormous whirlpools created by these currents are among the largest in the world and have become one of Tokushima Prefecture’s leading tourist attractions.

At its narrowest point, the Naruto Strait is only about 1.3 kilometers wide, connecting the Harima-nada Sea on the Seto Inland Sea side with the Kii Channel on the Pacific Ocean side. Because the timing of the tides differs between these two bodies of water, a significant difference in water levels develops. This difference causes a vast amount of seawater to rush through the narrow strait all at once. Combined with the complex contours of the seafloor and variations in current speed, this creates massive whirlpools. During spring tides, the current can exceed 20 kilometers per hour, and in spring and autumn, whirlpools measuring more than 20 meters in diameter—among the largest in the world—may be seen.

The whirlpools occur throughout the year in response to the rise and fall of the tides, but they cannot be seen all day. The most spectacular whirlpools appear approximately one to two hours before and after high or low tide. When planning a visit, it is recommended to check the tide tables published in advance by the various facilities and sightseeing boat operators to find the best viewing times.

There are three main ways to enjoy the Naruto Whirlpools. The most thrilling way to experience them up close is from a sightseeing boat. The large sightseeing boat Wonder Naruto approaches very close to the whirlpools, allowing passengers to observe their immense power at close range. Aqua Eddy, which is equipped with an underwater observation room, offers the rare opportunity to view the area around the whirlpools from below the surface. Uzushio Kisen operates small, high-speed sightseeing boats that can maneuver easily, offering an exhilarating cruise that takes passengers even closer to the whirlpools.

For views of the whirlpools from a bridge, Uzu no Michi, located inside the girders of the Ohnaruto Bridge, is a popular attraction. Visitors can walk along a promenade approximately 450 meters long to a point near the center of the strait, where they can look down at the whirlpools from a height of about 45 meters above the sea. Glass-floor sections along the route provide a thrilling view of the powerful currents surging beneath your feet. From the observation area, visitors can also enjoy magnificent views of the Ohnaruto Bridge, the Naruto Strait, the Pacific Ocean, the Harima-nada Sea, and Awaji Island.

Naruto Park is also home to the Ohnaruto Bridge Memorial Museum Eddy, where visitors can learn about the whirlpools in an entertaining way. Inside, models and videos clearly explain the construction technology behind the Ohnaruto Bridge and how the Naruto Whirlpools are formed. Since its renovation in 2018, the museum has offered a wealth of interactive exhibits using digital technology, including 360-degree videos and virtual reality. It has become a facility where visitors can learn not only about the whirlpools but also about the nature and culture of Tokushima Prefecture through immersive experiences. The rooftop observation area offers spectacular panoramic views of the Ohnaruto Bridge and the Naruto Strait.

The Naruto Strait is also blessed with beautiful natural scenery, and the magnificent landscape created by the Ohnaruto Bridge and the whirlpools takes on a different appearance with each season. On clear days, visitors can see as far as the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, while early mornings and evenings offer breathtaking views of the sea and sky glowing in beautiful colors. Naruto Park features observation decks and walking paths, allowing visitors to enjoy nature at a leisurely pace.

The surrounding area is also home to popular tourist attractions such as the Otsuka Museum of Art and Eska Hill Naruto. Together with the observation decks and walking paths in Naruto Park, these attractions can be enjoyed over the course of a full day.
