Takachiho Gorge
Takachiho Gorge is a stunning natural beauty created by the ancient volcanic activity of Mount Aso. This canyon features towering cliffs that stretch approximately 7 kilometers from east to west, reaching heights of up to 100 meters and averaging 80 meters. Designated as a national scenic spot and natural monument in Showa 9 (1934), its magnificent landscape attracts many tourists.
Within Takachiho Gorge lies Manai Falls, which is among Japan's top 100 waterfalls, showcasing beautiful water sprays from a height of about 17 meters. According to legend, the water from this waterfall is said to have been moved here by the deity Amano Murakumo during the descent of the heavenly grandson.
The gorge also offers historical elements, such as the photogenic Takachiho Three Bridges and the legendary Oniyatsu's Power Stone related to myths and legends.
With well-maintained walking paths, the view from the observation decks is especially breathtaking, where the emerald green surface of the water, the sound of the waterfalls, and the shimmering light soothe the hearts and bodies of visitors. Riding on a boat is also recommended; while prior reservation may be required at times, visitors can enjoy exciting sturgeon watching and delicious dining options during their wait.
