鵜戸神宮

Udo Shrine

Udo Shrine, located in the southern part of Miyazaki Prefecture facing Hyuga-Nada, is a shrine that is affectionately known locally as “Udo-san.” The main shrine, painted in vermilion, is situated inside a cave on a cape that juts out into the sea, creating a mystical atmosphere. The “Milk Rock” and “Milk Water,” known for their blessings of safe childbirth, child-rearing, and matchmaking, are particularly famous, attracting many worshippers. The sacred ritual of "untama-nage" (fortune ball throwing) is especially popular; men throw with their left hand and women with their right, and if the ball lands in the hollow of the turtle stone, their wishes are said to come true. In 2017, it was designated as a national scenic spot, adding to its appeal with beautiful landscapes.
