Mount Haguro Five-story Pagoda

Mount Haguro Five-story Pagoda

The Haguro Five-Story Pagoda is a historic structure considered to be the oldest in the Tohoku region, located at the entrance to the "Ichi no Saka" on the approach to Mount Haguro, amidst a row of cedars. According to legend, it was founded by Taira no Masakado, and the existing pagoda is believed to have been reconstructed about 600 years ago. Standing at a height of 29.0 meters, it is a wooden five-story structure with a thatched roof, recognized as a National Treasure in 1966, reflecting its significant value. Near the pagoda, there stands a giant cedar tree over 1,000 years old, known as "Jii-sugi," which is also a sight not to be missed. The Five-Story Pagoda, set against the changing seasons, particularly captivates many visitors with its elegant silhouette amid the snowy landscape. However, it should be noted that from May 2023 until spring 2025, roof renovation work will take place, which may limit access during some periods. This ancient pagoda, with its beauty, has become a valuable spot where one can experience the culture and history of the Tohoku region.
