Detailed Information

Senjojiki is a scenic landmark located in Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture. This popular tourist destination is characterized by a magnificent rock formation stretching along the Pacific coast. The striking white bedrock juts out toward the sea and consists of sandstone deposited in shallow waters during the Neogene Period, approximately 18 to 15 million years ago. Through uplift caused by tectonic movements and years of erosion by powerful waves, these strata have been shaped into the unique landscape seen today.

The name “Senjojiki” is said to come from the idea that the area is spacious enough to spread out a thousand tatami mats. The bedrock is relatively flat but has a stepped structure, making it look like tatami mats made of stone. The cross-sections of the many layers of strata overlap beautifully like a mille-feuille, with variations in grain size and color creating a landscape that can be described as a work of art produced by nature.

Because the bedrock is composed of relatively soft sandstone, it is easily affected by wave erosion, which has created its distinctive patterns and undulations. Another appeal is that visitors can walk across the rocks to get close to the sea, allowing them to experience the power of nature at close range. However, as the area is rocky, visitors are advised to wear comfortable, slip-resistant footwear.

Senjojiki also offers valuable geological observations. The strata contain trace fossils, such as the remains of burrows left by marine organisms on the seafloor, as well as ripple marks formed by the flow of water. These features provide a vivid reminder that this location was once beneath the sea.

The beauty of the scenery is another major attraction of Senjojiki. During the day, the white bedrock shines in the sunlight, creating a striking contrast with the blue ocean. Its appearance changes throughout the day, and at dusk, the sky and sea are bathed in orange as the setting sun sinks below the horizon, creating a spectacular view. This beautiful sunset is particularly popular and is one of the reasons why so many tourists visit the area. Senjojiki is also known as one of the most scenic coastlines in the Nanki-Kumano Geopark.

There are many other attractions nearby, including Sandanbeki, making it easy to visit several sightseeing spots in one trip. Visitors can also enjoy dining with a view at Kaisenya Senjojiki and shopping for local specialties from Nanki-Shirahama at Akane Senjojiki Chaya. The area is well suited to leisurely walks and scenic drives, offering a relaxing opportunity to enjoy nature while taking in the surroundings.

In this way, Senjojiki allows visitors to experience the overwhelming natural beauty created by landforms shaped over countless years and the magnificent scenery of the Pacific Ocean. It is one of Wakayama’s most representative tourist attractions, inspiring visitors with the power and mystery of the natural world.
