Detailed Information
Toretore Market Nanki-Shirahama is one of the largest seafood markets in western Japan. Located in Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture, it is operated by the local Katata Fishery Cooperative Association. Taking advantage of its direct connection to the fishing cooperative, the market offers a wide variety of seafood, including freshly landed local fish and products delivered from major fishing ports throughout Japan. It is highly regarded for the freshness and quality of its offerings. Many products are also reasonably priced, making the market popular not only with tourists but also with local residents.
The market’s main area features fish landed in Susami and Kushimoto in Wakayama Prefecture, as well as high-quality red sea bream farmed by the cooperative. Depending on the season and availability, visitors may also find Kishu kenken bonito and the rare mochi bonito. Large tanks filled with swimming fish, including grouper, provide an entertaining spectacle. The tuna section sometimes offers fresh tuna, which can be sliced and sold on the spot, allowing visitors to enjoy its exceptionally fresh flavor.
One of Toretore Market’s most popular attractions is its regularly held tuna-cutting show. Skilled fishmongers expertly cut up huge fish weighing dozens of kilograms, including bluefin tuna and tuna caught in Katsuura. The impressive performance is well worth seeing. The tuna after being cut can also be purchased on the spot, allowing visitors to savor its unparalleled freshness.
The dining options are also extensive. At Toretore Yokocho inside the market, visitors can enjoy seafood bowls, sashimi, sushi, and other dishes made with an abundance of fresh seafood. Another popular feature is the paid BBQ area, where visitors can grill seafood, meat, and vegetables purchased at the market. It offers an easy and enjoyable barbecue experience.
Shopping is another highlight. The market is filled with Wakayama specialties, including Kishu plums, delicacies, fish cakes, sweets, and much more, making it an ideal place to look for souvenirs. From processed seafood products to traditional local confections, the wide selection allows visitors to experience the best of Shirahama all in one place.
Toretore Market is also part of the resort complex Toretore Park, which offers a variety of leisure facilities nearby. These include Katata Fishing Pond, an offshore fishing facility where visitors can enjoy fishing without bringing their own equipment; Toretore no Yu, a day-use bathing facility where guests can enjoy Shirahama Onsen; and accommodation facilities. Visitors can therefore spend a relaxing full day enjoying not only food and shopping but also a range of recreational activities.
In this way, Toretore Market Nanki-Shirahama is a comprehensive tourist destination where visitors can buy, eat, and experience the best of the sea. It is one of Shirahama’s most popular attractions, offering families and friends the chance to enjoy a memorable time while fully experiencing the charms of the ocean.
