Detailed Information

Adventure World is an experiential theme park in Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture, built around the concept of “A Smile for the Heart, a Park for Creating the Future.” It opened in 1978 and adopted its current name in 1983. This vast facility combines a zoo, aquarium, and amusement park, covering approximately 800,000 square meters. As one of the leading tourist attractions in the Nanki region, it is beloved by visitors of all ages.

Approximately 1,400 animals representing around 140 species live in the park, where visitors can encounter and interact with animals in a variety of themed areas. The main areas include Safari World, where land animals live in settings designed to resemble their natural habitats; Marine World, home to dolphins, whales, penguins, sea lions, and other marine animals; and the Play Zone, an amusement park area packed with attractions.

In Safari World, visitors can tour the park in special vehicles or aboard the Kenya-go, a train-style vehicle, and observe large animals such as lions, tigers, giraffes, and elephants up close. Tours that allow visitors to feed treats to herbivores are also popular, offering an especially close encounter with the animals.

At Marine World, one of the highlights is “Marine Live,” a dynamic performance featuring dolphins and whales. The show, in which trainers and dolphins perform in perfect harmony, is thrilling and captivates many visitors. There are also plenty of entertaining and educational performances, such as “Animal Action,” featuring sea lions and small animals. In addition, the park offers numerous hands-on experiences, including areas where visitors can observe dolphins up close.

Adventure World was once widely known for housing giant pandas. Visitors could see the panda family at the Breeding Center and PANDA LOVE, but all four pandas were returned to China at the end of June 2025. (The latest information on the animals currently housed at the park should be confirmed separately.)

In the amusement park area, Play Zone, visitors can enjoy a variety of attractions, including a Ferris wheel, roller coasters, and go-karts. From small children to adults, everyone can find something to enjoy. With its combination of animal encounters and amusement facilities, the park offers such a wide range of activities that it is difficult to see everything in a single day.

The park also has a wide selection of restaurants and shops. Visitors can enjoy local specialties such as Wakayama ramen, as well as adorable animal-themed dishes, and can take food to go and enjoy a picnic-style meal within the park. The shops sell original goods featuring designs of pandas, lions, and other animals, along with Wakayama specialties, making them ideal places to find souvenirs.

Access is convenient: the park is approximately a 10-minute bus ride from Shirahama Station on the JR Kisei Main Line. Direct buses also operate from Osaka and Kyoto. Loved by families, couples, and visitors of all generations, Adventure World is a destination that everyone can enjoy.

Adventure World is a captivating theme park where visitors can experience healing, warmth, and inspiration through encounters with animals.
