Kumano Hongu Taisha
Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of the Kumano Sanzan (Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha, and Kumano Hayatama Taisha) and serves as the head shrine of all Kumano shrines across the country. Since the Heian period, it has been a pilgrimage destination for many people who traversed the arduous paths of ascetic practices. The cypress-bark-roofed shrine compound has a serene presence, and upon passing through the sacred gate, visitors are greeted by a grove of ancient cedar trees that evoke a sense of history. Originally located at "Osaibara," it was moved to its current site after a flood in the 22nd year of the Meiji era. The shrine buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties of the country.
