Detailed Information
Shirarahama in Wakayama Prefecture is one of Japan’s beautiful coastal areas.
Historical Background
From the Meiji to Taisho periods, the sand of Shirarahama was excavated as a raw material for glass and transported to Osaka. However, due to changes in glass manufacturing methods and the need to preserve the landscape, sand excavation was discontinued.
Summer Beach Resort
Today, Shirarahama is known as one of the premier beach resorts in the Kansai region. During the summer, it attracts many beachgoers, especially from the Keihanshin area, and the beach season traditionally opens on May 3 each year. In the summer season, it welcomes more than 600,000 visitors.
Events and Fireworks
During the summer beach season, fireworks festivals such as the Shirahama Fireworks Festival and the Shirahama Fireworks Display are held, lighting up the sky with beautiful fireworks. Various events are also held throughout the year, entertaining visitors.
Hot Springs
Around Shirarahama, there are famous hot springs such as Mabu-yu and open-air baths scattered throughout the area, allowing tourists to enjoy onsen. In particular, “Shirasuna,” a mixed-gender open-air bath where swimsuits are required, is especially popular.
Sand Conservation
Because the beach sand is being washed away by waves and the supply of sand from the hinterland has been cut off, Shirahama Town is working to protect the beach. Projects such as adding sand from Australia have been carried out, and the beautiful white sand is still maintained today.
Sister Beach Partnership
In 2000, a friendship sister-beach partnership was established with Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, promoting international exchange.
Nature and Tourism
The area around Shirarahama is blessed with natural beauty and is ideal for walks and picnics. Visitors can enjoy the scenery of the coastline and the beauty of the sea.
Shirarahama in Wakayama Prefecture is a tourist destination with many attractions, including its beautiful coastline, summer leisure activities, cultural events, and unique sand conservation project.
