Dakigaeri Gorge

Dakigaeri Gorge

Hōkaeri Valley is a beautiful 10-kilometer-long gorge that stretches along the midstream of the Tamagawa River, which flows between Lake Tazawa and Kakunodate. It has been named "Hōkaeri," meaning "to embrace and return," because in ancient times, when people traversed the area, the path was so narrow and steep that they could only proceed by holding each other as if embracing. The "Hōkaeri Maple Festival" is held from early October to early November, showcasing the stunning fresh greenery and autumn foliage, and attracts numerous tourists. By walking along the well-maintained promenade, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking views of the mysterious blue stream, "God's Rock Bridge," "Oath Bridge," and "Recollection Falls," among others. Especially, "Recollection Falls" is known for its beauty, making it a spot that people want to look back at repeatedly. The promenade is closed to pedestrian traffic during winter, from late November to late April, so caution is necessary when planning a visit. This valley, renowned for its beautiful landscapes, is beloved by many and is often called the "Yabakei of Tohoku."
