Sukayu Onsen

Sukayu Onsen is a traditional hot spring area with a history of about 300 years, located on the slopes of Mount Hakkoda. It is particularly famous for its large mixed bathing area known as the "Hiba Sen'nin Buro." This bathhouse, constructed entirely of Hiba wood, features a spacious area of 160 tatami mats and a ceiling height of 5 meters, creating an open space without a single pillar. The unique scent of Hiba wood and the otherworldly atmosphere captivate visitors. Sukayu Onsen has a tradition of "Yūji," believed to be effective for muscle pain, joint pain, and fatigue recovery. Its name originates from a legend that deer healed their wounds in this hot spring; it was initially called "Shikayu" but was changed to "Sukayu" due to the strong acidity of the water.

The large bathhouse contains five bathtubs, allowing visitors to enjoy the unique qualities of each. Those who may feel uncomfortable in a mixed bathing setting can purchase a bathing suit. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature throughout the seasons, with many people coming to enjoy mountain skiing with stunning frost-covered trees in winter or to partake in autumn leaf viewing.
