Cape Kamui

Cape Kamui

Cape Kamui is a beautiful tourist spot located in the northwest part of the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido, offering a breathtaking view of the Sea of Japan from a height of 80 meters. The sea, known as Shakotan Blue, boasts high transparency and beauty reminiscent of tropical waters. You can reach the cape by walking the "Charenka Trail" for about 20 minutes, and from the tip of the cape, you can enjoy a 300-degree panoramic view that allows you to feel the curvature of the earth.

Cape Kamui also carries a poignant legend. It is said that a girl named Charenka threw herself into the sea chasing her beloved Yoshitsune, and her body transformed into the Kamui Rock, a tale passed down in the local tradition. As a result, access for women was once forbidden.

This area is also designated as part of the Niseko Shakotan Otaru Coast National Park, and the views from the Cape Kamui Lighthouse and the surrounding square are exceptional. However, it is important to note that the walking paths may be closed during strong winds, so visitors should exercise caution when planning their trip.
