Washuzan Observation Deck

Washuzan Observatory is a popular viewing spot located near the summit of Mount Washuzan in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. Known as one of the most scenic destinations in Setonaikai National Park, it has also been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. Many tourists visit to enjoy its spectacular panoramic views of the numerous islands scattered across the Seto Inland Sea and the magnificent Seto Ohashi Bridge.

The name “Washuzan” comes from the mountain’s resemblance to an eagle spreading its wings. From Shoshuho Peak, located near the 133-meter-high summit, visitors can admire the beautiful multi-island scenery formed by more than 50 large and small islands scattered across the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea. On clear days, it is even possible to see as far as the Shikoku region on the opposite shore. This magnificent panorama is regarded as one of the most beautiful views in the Seto Inland Sea area.

There are two observatories, one near the Washuzan Rest House and the other near the Washuzan Visitor Center. Each offers a different perspective of the Seto Ohashi Bridge and the Seto Inland Sea, with the bridge’s powerful presence being particularly impressive. During the day, visitors can enjoy refreshing scenery created by the blue sea, blue sky, and islands. In the evening, the sea and sky are illuminated in shades of orange, creating a dreamlike landscape.

The beauty of the sunset is especially famous throughout Japan, and the view has been selected as one of the “100 Best Sunsets in Japan.” At dusk, the silhouette of the Seto Ohashi Bridge combines with the sunset reflecting across the Seto Inland Sea to create a romantic scene that captivates photographers and tourists alike. Since the landscape takes on different appearances during the day and evening, one of the observatory’s attractions is the opportunity to enjoy a variety of views depending on the time of day.

Well-maintained walking paths surround the observatories, allowing visitors to take a leisurely stroll while enjoying the natural surroundings. The Washuzan Rest House also features a shop and rest areas, where visitors can enjoy meals or light snacks while taking in the views.

Access is convenient, with the observatory located about a 10-minute drive from the Kojima Interchange on the Seto-Chuo Expressway, making it a popular driving destination. Many visitors combine a trip to the observatory with sightseeing around the Seto Ohashi Bridge, and it is widely regarded as one of Okayama Prefecture’s premier scenic spots.
