Heiwa Park (Heiwa Memorial Statue, Heiwa Spring)
Nagasaki's Peace Park was created to commemorate the tragic history of the atomic bombing on August 9, 1945, and to pray for peace. The Peace Statue, created by the local sculptor Seibo Kitamura, stands 9.7 meters tall and weighs 30 tons. With its right hand, it symbolizes the "threat of the atomic bomb," while its left hand signifies "peace," and it closes its eyes to pray for the souls of the victims. Every year on August 9, a Peace Memorial Ceremony is held, broadcasting a peace declaration to the entire world. The Fountain of Peace, established in 1969, symbolizes the water that the hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) sought. The Peace Park is also dotted with monuments from various countries and features offerings of thousand origami cranes.
