雲仙地獄

Unzen Jigoku

Unzen Jigoku, a representative tourist spot of Unzen Onsen, presents a hellish landscape filled with the smell of sulfur and billowing steam. It is also known as a stage for the martyrdom of Christians, with a monument commemorating the martyrs erected here. About 30 different hells, such as "Okyokwan Jigoku" and "Oito Jigoku," are scattered around, each telling many tragic stories and legends. In the fall of 2016, it was renovated and transformed from a "viewing hell" to an "experiential hell." The walking paths have been improved, allowing visitors to enjoy foot steaming experiences, the sale of onsen tamago (hot spring eggs) at the hell workshop, and breaks at the hell observation deck.
