Hashima Island
Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island), is an uninhabited island located approximately 40 minutes by boat from Nagasaki Port, which once thrived as a coal mining site. At its peak in 1960, around 5,300 people lived there, boasting one of the highest population densities in the world. The island's exterior, lined with high-rise reinforced concrete buildings, resembles the battleship "Tosa," which is why it is called Gunkanjima. The coal mine was closed in 1974, leaving the island uninhabited, but it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 as part of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." Today, it is possible to visit the island through guided tours.
