Oura Cathedral
Oura Cathedral is a Gothic-style church built in the foreign settlement of Nagasaki during the late Edo period, and it is the oldest existing church architecture in Japan. Construction was completed at the end of 1864, and the church was consecrated in February 1865. In March of the same year, it became the site of the "discovery of the faithful," where the hidden Christians of Urakami confessed their faith. Under the guidance of French missionaries Father Furé and Father Petitjean, a carpenter from Amakusa named Koyama Hideyoshin (who later changed his name to Hidetoshi) was responsible for the construction. In 1933, it was designated as a national treasure and was re-designated in 1953. In 2018, it was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site as part of the "Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining."
