Fukuoka Tower

Fukuoka Tower is a 234-meter-high observation tower located in the Seaside Momochi district of Sawara Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It was built as a monument for the Asia-Pacific Exposition (Yokatopia), held in 1989 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Fukuoka City’s municipal government. Today, it is beloved as a landmark symbolizing Fukuoka City, including the Seaside Momochi area. It is the tallest seaside tower in Japan and is also known by the nickname “Mirror Sail,” thanks to its beautiful equilateral triangular design covered with approximately 8,000 half-mirrors.

On February 1, 2019, Fukuoka Tower underwent its first full renovation since opening and was reborn under the concept “Celebrate Your Fukuoka Anniversary at Fukuoka Tower.” With the theme “Enjoy Fukuoka’s Sky and Play with the Scenery,” the facility now offers not only observation decks but also interactive attractions, photo spots, barrier-free facilities, and multilingual signs, making it an enjoyable destination for everyone from children to adults.

The main highlight is “SKY View 123,” the top observation deck located 123 meters above the ground. From the observation deck, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Fukuoka’s cityscape, Hakata Bay, and Seaside Momochi Seaside Park. On clear days, they can also see the islands around Hakata Bay, including Nokonoshima Island. During the day, visitors can take in a refreshing view where the blue sea meets the cityscape; in the evening, they can watch the beautiful sunset over Hakata Bay; and at night, they can admire a dreamlike cityscape selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Night Views.” This allows visitors to enjoy a different aspect of the scenery throughout the day. At night, the “Sky Illumination” creates a romantic atmosphere, with phosphorescent stones scattered across the floor glowing like a starry sky.

The observation deck on the second level features “SKY Café & Dining Refuge,” where visitors can enjoy lunch, café fare, or dinner while taking in spectacular views through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The café and restaurant offers sweets, dishes, and drinks unique to Fukuoka Tower. It is a popular spot where guests can spend a special time enjoying the daytime scenery, sunset, or nighttime views.

“SKY Play 116,” located 116 meters above the ground on the first observation level, is an interactive floor filled with playful experiences. Fukuoka Tower has been recognized as a “Lover’s Sanctuary,” and popular attractions include a heart-shaped monument that lights up when two people touch it while holding hands, as well as the “Vow Fence,” where couples can attach “Ai Kagi,” original heart-shaped padlocks from Fukuoka Tower, to pledge eternal love and the bond they share with someone special. Numerous romantic features are available for couples commemorating special moments or enjoying a date.

The first observation level also offers a variety of interactive attractions that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. “Sky Gacha” provides an entertaining experience that makes it seem as though a giant capsule is falling from the sky. At “Omikuji Pinball,” visitors launch a pinball toward the sky and have their fortune told through a traditional fortune slip written in the Hakata dialect. At the “Happening Window,” virtual images of UFOs, robots, and other phenomena are superimposed on footage of Fukuoka’s cityscape, creating the mysterious sensation that unexpected events are happening outside the window.

The third observation level features photo spots where visitors can experience Fukuoka’s sky and scenery, including the “123-Step Skywalk,” which takes advantage of the views from 123 meters above the ground. “Fukuoka Panorama” presents a time-lapse video showing how the cityscape visible from the tower changes from daytime to evening and then night, allowing visitors to enjoy Fukuoka’s many different faces in a short time. The observation floors also provide photo props for commemorative pictures and a stamp rally, making them popular with families and tourists.

Fukuoka Tower is also famous for being illuminated with colorful lights across its entire structure at night. Beautiful light displays transform the tower into a canvas, with designs changing according to the season or event, including the Milky Way, Christmas trees, cherry blossoms, and Tanabata decorations. At other times, the lighting highlights the triangular shape at the top of the tower or evokes the waves and breeze of Momochihama Beach. Seasonal illuminations have become a beloved feature of Fukuoka’s nightscape, attracting many visitors who come to take photographs.

The first floor houses shops selling Hakata specialties, such as traditional sweets and spicy cod roe, as well as local souvenirs and Fukuoka Tower-exclusive goods. There is also a restaurant serving dishes prepared with ingredients from Hakata. Visitors can enjoy a meal, take a break, or go shopping between sightseeing activities, making the floor a convenient place to find souvenirs and mementos of a trip to Fukuoka. Nursing rooms, barrier-free facilities, and multilingual information are also available, making the tower accessible and comfortable for families with young children and visitors from overseas.
