Kushida Shrine
Kushida Shrine is known as the guardian shrine of Hakata and is affectionately referred to by locals as "O-Kushida-san." It has a long history and the current shrine buildings were established by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The shrine serves as the centerpiece for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, showcasing impressive decorative floats that attract many visitors. Within the grounds stands a ginkgo tree, over 1,000 years old, which has been designated as a natural monument by the prefecture. The deities enshrined here include Okunzunomikoto, Amaterasu Omikami, and Susanoo no Mikoto, and the Gion Yamakasa is dedicated here as a summer tradition of Hakata. In recent years, due to its accessibility, it has become a popular spot for tourists, while still maintaining a close connection to local life. Located in the heart of Fukuoka City, the serene presence of Kushida Shrine and its tranquil atmosphere serve as a place of solace for many.
