Canal City Hakata

Canal City Hakata is a large-scale mixed-use complex located in Sumiyoshi, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It opened on April 20, 1996, based on the concept of “a theater of the city.” Built on a site of approximately 43,500 square meters, it brings together a shopping mall, restaurants, cinemas, theaters, amusement facilities, hotels, showrooms, offices, and more, creating a space that resembles a city in itself. It is also one of the main entrances to Canal City Hakata and is known as one of the complex’s signature architectural spaces.

On the southern side of Crystal Canyon stands the large-scale work “Fuku/Luck, Fuku=Luck, Matrix” by the internationally renowned video artist Nam June Paik. The installation uses a total of 180 monitors arranged in 10 vertical rows and 18 horizontal columns, displaying a succession of different images. Considered one of the largest works by Nam June Paik in Japan, it is a representative piece of public art at Canal City Hakata, where visitors can experience contemporary art within a commercial facility. Sun Plaza Stage, located in the central part of the canal, is the heart of Canal City Hakata’s entertainment offerings. In addition to tonkotsu ramen, the selection includes ramen based on miso, soy sauce, seafood, and other regional styles, so visitors can choose according to their preferences. The complex is also home to Canal City Theater, where visitors can enjoy musicals, plays, concerts, and other performances. In 2011, Canal City Hakata East Building opened on the eastern side of the complex, but it temporarily closed in May 2023. A redevelopment plan was subsequently considered, and it was announced that the building would reopen in autumn 2026 after being repurposed. Following the reopening, a total of 16 stores are scheduled to open, including large-scale retailers—one of which is expected to have one of the largest sales floors in Japan—as well as restaurants and experiential attractions. It is approximately a three-minute walk from Kushida Shrine Station on the Fukuoka City Subway Nanakuma Line and is easy to reach from Hakata Station, Tenjin, and the Nakasu area.
