Detailed Information
Enakyo is a scenic spot named by geographer Shiga Jukou in 1920, and it is an artificial lake created about 100 years ago by damming the Kiso River with the Oi Dam. The Oi Dam, built as Japan's first full-scale commercial hydroelectric power dam, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024, and the artificial landscape created by this dam lake is Enakyo. The beautiful scenery, where nature and human activity harmonize, continues to attract many visitors today.
On both banks of the lake, unique rocks and boulders formed by years of weathering, such as the Lion Rock, Mirror Rock, and Umbrella Rock, line the dramatic cliffs, creating a dynamic gorge. Among these, the Umbrella Rock, shaped like a mushroom, is designated as a natural monument and is one of the main attractions of Enakyo. In spring, around 200 cherry blossoms and azalea trees bloom beautifully in the Sazanami Square on the left bank, delighting visitors.
In summer, the vibrant new greenery contrasts strikingly with the red Enakyo Great Bridge, creating a refreshing landscape. In autumn, the maples and Japanese maples paint the entire gorge, showcasing beauty that has made it one of the 33 selected autumn foliage spots in Hida and Mino, with the best viewing period typically occurring from mid to late November. In winter, waterfowl such as Mandarin ducks and starlings migrate to the area, allowing for enjoyable bird watching on the tranquil lake surface.
To fully enjoy the charm of Enakyo, a sightseeing boat is recommended. By boarding one of the boats departing from the embarkation point, visitors can get a close-up view of the unique rocks and cliffs from the water, experiencing a dynamic landscape unlike what is seen from land. Visitors can relax and spend time appreciating the ever-changing beauty of the gorge throughout the seasons.
In March 2020, the square and walking paths were renovated, and the Enakyo Visitor Center was established to educate visitors about the history and nature of Enakyo. The surrounding area features Sazanami Square, Momosuke Square, and walking paths that allow visitors to leisurely enjoy the scenery while crossing over the Oi Dam. On Benten Island, which floats on the lake, the glowing offering box for Benten-san captures the attention of visitors.
This area is also where Momosuke Fukuzawa, known as the "King of Electricity," recognized the Kiso River's terrain as suitable for hydroelectric power and overcame numerous challenges to complete the dam's construction. Enakyo, with its rich history and majestic nature, is a captivating tourist destination that showcases a variety of expressions throughout the four seasons.
