Detailed Information

Shin-Enoshima Aquarium, commonly known as “Enosui,” is an aquarium located in an outstanding setting facing Sagami Bay, with a vast ocean in front, Mount Fuji to the right, and Enoshima Island to the left. Carrying on the tradition and research of the former Enoshima Aquarium, which opened in 1954, it grandly reopened in its current form in 2004. Long beloved by local residents, “Enosui” is a comprehensive marine museum based on the concept of an “edutainment aquarium” that combines marine science, education, and entertainment, offering new discoveries and inspiration every time you visit.

【Sagami Bay Large Tank】— A “Living Ocean Current” Created by About 8,000 Japanese sardines
The aquarium’s most iconic exhibit is the massive “Sagami Bay Large Tank,” which recreates Sagami Bay.
• The sight of about 8,000 Japanese sardines swimming in a school, their silver scales shimmering, is breathtaking like a curtain of the sea.
• The dense school of sardines reflects light and changes color, creating a strikingly different impression depending on the viewing angle and time of day.
This large tank faithfully recreates Sagami Bay’s environments, including rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, and offshore waters, and is home to more than 20,000 creatures representing about 100 species.

【Deep Sea I / Deep Sea II】— At the Forefront of Japan’s First Long-Term Deep-Sea Creature Research
In cooperation with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Shin-Enoshima Aquarium is one of Japan’s leading specialized facilities for the husbandry and research of deep-sea creatures. Because the deep sea is an environment of extreme pressure, low temperature, and minimal light, it is difficult to keep such creatures in captivity. The species on display vary by season, but the content always remains at the cutting edge of deep-sea research.
In “Deep Sea I,” visitors can learn about:
• Japan’s first challenges in long-term deep-sea creature husbandry
• Scientific efforts from collection and transportation to care
• Deep-sea exploration vehicles and the background of research
This exhibit allows visitors to experience the rarely seen world of the deep sea.

【Jellyfish Fantasy Hall】— One of the World’s Finest Jellyfish Exhibits, Born from About 70 Years of Research
The jellyfish exhibit, built on more than 70 years of research dating back to the former Enoshima Aquarium, is one of Enosui’s defining features. In the Jellyfish Fantasy Hall, visitors are enveloped by:
• About 50 species on display at all times (the lineup may vary slightly by season)
• Large species such as the Pacific sea nettle
• A dreamlike space combining sound, light, and imagery
With easy-to-understand explanations about jellyfish ecology and growth, the hall offers a soothing experience.
In the jellyfish show, jellyfish floating in the tank blend with lighting effects to create an extraordinary, immersive experience.

【Dolphin Show Stadium】— A “Seaside Theater” United with Nature
At the open-air stadium facing the sea, powerful dolphin shows are performed.
• The Sagami Bay horizon stretching out behind
• The sea breeze and sound of the waves
• Sunlight and sunset effects
All of these natural elements become part of the show, and the dolphins’ jumps and spins deliver a truly musical sense of excitement.

【Animal Exhibits】— A Relaxing Space Where You Can Meet Adorable Friends
Inside and outside the aquarium, visitors can observe a variety of marine mammals and small animals up close.
• Penguins
• Seals
• Asian small-clawed otters
• Sea turtles
This popular area soothes visitors with the animals’ natural behavior, and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, there may also be programs where visitors can interact with sea turtles (dates vary).

【Learning Exhibits】— The World’s First “Shirasu Science” and Community-Based Marine Education
The “Shirasu Science” corner is the world’s first permanent exhibit where visitors can observe the growth process of anchovies from eggs to adults.
It introduces the life cycle from newly born transparent shirasu to the familiar form seen on the dinner table, making it a valuable exhibit for learning about the connections of life.
In addition,
• The “Sagami Bay Kids Tank,” designed for easy viewing in a small aquarium
• Exhibits recreating local waterfront environments such as Zushi and the Sagami River
There are many other features designed to clearly communicate the familiar sea and nature around us.

【Nagisa Experience Learning Center】— Hands-On Programs to Touch, Feel, and Think About the Sea
At the adjacent “Nagisa Experience Learning Center,” visitors can enjoy a wide variety of programs, including:
• Observing creatures living along the shore
• Craft experiences using natural materials
• Workshops on marine environments
With a strong focus on marine education, this facility is also widely used by school groups.

【Café and Shop】— Enosui Specialties, Gourmet Treats, and Souvenirs
At the café inside the aquarium, popular animal-themed items such as:
• Kameron-pan
• Otter bread
• Seal bread
can be enjoyed.
The shop also offers many original goods, sweets, and other perfect souvenirs.

【Summary】— A Full Day of Marine Wonders
Shin-Enoshima Aquarium brings together:
• The rich ecosystems of Sagami Bay and the Pacific Ocean
• The cutting edge of deep-sea research
• World-class jellyfish exhibits
• Dynamic shows and soothing creatures
• Fun and educational hands-on programs
It is one of Japan’s leading comprehensive marine museums.
Combining “fun to see, deep to learn, and soothing to experience,” it is beloved by many visitors as an aquarium where both children and adults can enjoy a full day.
