Detailed Information
The Shin-Enoshima Aquarium, commonly known as "Enosui," is located in an exceptional setting facing Sagami Bay, with a vast sea in front, Mount Fuji to the right, and Enoshima Island to the left. Inheriting the traditions and research of the old Enoshima Aquarium, which opened in 1954, it grandly reopened in its current form in 2004. The aquarium continues to be beloved by locals, featuring a concept of an "edutainment aquarium" that combines marine science, education, and entertainment, offering new discoveries and thrills with every visit as a comprehensive marine museum.
**Sagami Bay Large Tank** — A “Living Current” of approximately 8,000 sardines
The most iconic display in the aquarium is the gigantic "Sagami Bay Large Tank," which recreates Sagami Bay.
• The sight of about 8,000 sardines swimming in schools and shimmering with silver scales is nothing short of breathtaking, resembling a curtain of the sea.
• The densely packed schools of sardines reflect light, changing colors and providing a drastically different impression depending on the viewing angle and time.
This large tank faithfully recreates the environments of Sagami Bay, including rocky areas, sandy bottoms, and offshore zones, housing over 20,000 creatures of around 100 species.
**Deep Sea I & Deep Sea II** — Japan's first "Long-term Cultivation Research on Deep-sea Creatures"
Shin-Enoshima Aquarium is one of the nation’s leading facilities conducting research on the cultivation of deep-sea creatures in collaboration with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). Due to the unique environment of deep sea with high pressure, low temperature, and low light, cultivation is challenging, and the species displayed may vary by season; however, the exhibits are always at the forefront of deep-sea research.
In "Deep Sea I," you can experience:
• Japan's first challenge of long-term cultivation of deep-sea creatures
• Scientific approaches from collection methods to transportation and cultivation
• Background on submarine exploration and research
and delve into the rarely seen world of the deep sea.
**Jellyfish Fantasy Hall** — “One of the world’s premier jellyfish displays” honed through approximately 70 years of research
The jellyfish exhibit, built on over 70 years of research that began during the old Enoshima Aquarium, is one of the aquarium's most significant features. In the Jellyfish Fantasy Hall:
• About 50 species are on display at any given time (note that the content may slightly vary by season)
• Large species such as the “Pacific Sea Nettle”
• A fantastical space created through a combination of sound, light, and video
envelops visitors, providing a soothing experience along with easy-to-understand explanations about jellyfish ecology and growth.
The jellyfish show offers an immersive experience as the floating jellyfish combine with light effects, creating an extraordinary ambiance.
**Dolphin Show Stadium** — A “seaside theater” that integrates with nature
In the open stadium facing the sea, exhilarating dolphin shows take place.
• The horizon of Sagami Bay spreads out behind
• Sea breezes and sounds of waves
• Effects of sunlight and sunsets
All these natural elements become part of the show, and the dolphin jumps and spins offer an emotional experience akin to a musical.
**Animal Exhibits** — A healing space to meet charming companions
Inside and outside the aquarium, various marine mammals and small animals can be seen up close.
• Penguins
• Seals
• Asian Small-clawed Otters
• Sea Turtles
This popular zone allows you to be healed by their natural behaviors, and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, there are programs for interaction with sea turtles (note that the days may vary).
**Educational Exhibits** — World-first “Shirasu Science” and community-oriented marine education
The "Shirasu Science" corner features the world’s first permanent exhibit where you can observe the growth process of sardines from eggs to adult fish.
It provides a valuable display introducing the life cycle from newly hatched transparent young sardines to their well-known table appearance, showcasing the connection of life.
Additionally, there are many efforts to communicate local marine and natural environments, such as:
• "Sagami Bay Kids Tank," designed to be easily viewable in small tanks
• Exhibits reproducing the local aquatic environments like Zushi and the Sagami River.
**“Nagisa Experience Learning Center”** — Programs to touch, feel, and think about the ocean
The adjacent "Nagisa Experience Learning Center" offers a variety of programs, including:
• Observation of coastal creatures
• Craft experiences using natural materials
• Workshops learning about marine environments
The center is also focused on marine education and is frequently used by school groups.
**Café and Shop** — Enosui's signature gourmet and souvenirs
In the café inside the aquarium, you can enjoy popular adorable menus like:
• Turtle melon bread
• Otter bread
• Seal bread
The shop is stocked with many original goods and sweets, perfect for souvenirs.
**Summary** — A day to fully experience the charms of the ocean
Shin-Enoshima Aquarium is:
• A rich ecosystem of Sagami Bay and the Pacific Ocean
• The forefront of deep-sea research
• Jellyfish exhibits of world-class quality
• Dynamic shows and soothing creatures
• Fun and educational experience programs
These elements combine to create one of Japan’s leading comprehensive marine museums.
It’s a beloved aquarium where the charm of "Fun to see, deep to learn, and soothing" attracts many visitors of all ages for an entire day of enjoyment.
