Detailed Information
Naruko Gorge is a deep canyon approximately 100 meters deep, formed by the erosion of the Otani River, located in Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. It has been designated as a national scenic spot and is included in Kurikoma Quasi-National Park. The sheer cliffs extend for about 2.5 kilometers, creating a magnificent landscape with white rock faces, unusual rock formations, and lush trees. In spring and summer, the fresh greenery is beautiful, while in autumn, it is known as one of the top spots for fall foliage in Tohoku. From mid-October to mid-November each year, the maple, beech, and oak trees turn shades of red and yellow, contrasted against the evergreens. Because the best viewing period can vary due to climate, it's recommended to check for the latest information before visiting.
A prominent scenic spot is the "Oofukasawa Bridge," which arches beautifully. From the bridge, visitors can get a sweeping view of the cliffs down to the gorge floor, and with a bit of luck, encounter a train running on the JR Rikuu-Tohoku Line as it passes through a tunnel. The "Naruko Gorge Rest House" provides an observation deck and lookout points, where you can also enjoy meals and purchase souvenirs. During the autumn foliage season, it becomes a bustling spot for photography enthusiasts.
For those who wish to experience nature up close, the "Oofukasawa Promenade," which is about 2.2 kilometers long, is recommended. It is paved and easy to walk, with little elevation change, allowing for a round trip in about 50 minutes. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful gorge while listening to the murmuring river and breathing the fresh air. However, it is important to note that the promenade is closed during winter. Additionally, there is the "Naruko Gorge Trail," which follows the Otani River. From this path, you can see unique rock formations such as "Saru no Tegakizui" and "Byobu Rock," but in recent years, some sections have been closed due to falling rocks and disasters, so exploring the area usually involves using divided routes. Please check the accessibility status before your visit.
Access is available via the Tohoku Shinkansen to JR Furukawa Station, where you can transfer to the Rikuu-Tohoku Line and disembark at either "Naruko Onsen Station" or "Nakayama-daira Onsen Station." If you plan to use the rest house or Oofukasawa Promenade, Nakayama-daira Onsen Station is more convenient, while Naruko Onsen Station is nearest for the Naruko Gorge Trail.
Naruko Gorge showcases different expressions throughout the four seasons, but especially during the autumn foliage season, it attracts many tourists from across the country who come to enjoy its impressive and beautiful scenery.
