Godaido Hall
Godaido is one of the iconic landscapes of Matsushima, offering a stunning view of Matsushima Bay. Founded in 807 by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, who established the Benten Hall, and named "Godaido" in 828 when the monk Jikaku Daishi Ennin enshrined the Five Great Wisdom Kings statues. These statues are hidden treasures that are only revealed once every 33 years. The current hall was rebuilt in 1604 by Date Masamune and showcases elements of Momoyama culture. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and the view of the sea from the transparent bridge helps to focus the minds of the worshippers. It is also recommended to visit along with Zuiganji Temple.
