Sakunami Onsen
Sakunami Onsen is located about 40 minutes by car from the city of Sendai and is affectionately known as the "back room of Sendai." In 721, a monk named Gyoki, while traveling through Oshu, was drawn by the cries of a Buddhist monk and descended a deep forest slope to discover hot springs bubbling at the riverbed of the Hirose River. He interpreted this as a divine revelation and widely taught the benefits and bathing methods of the springs to the people. It is said that in 1189, Minamoto no Yoritomo also soaked in the baths to relieve his fatigue. In 1796, the feudal lord Date Naomura granted permission for the establishment of the hot spring town. Known for its skin-friendly "beauty-enhancing waters," visitors can enjoy outdoor baths and rock baths. The water is colorless and transparent, with benefits for fatigue recovery and high blood pressure.
