Detailed Information
Akiu Great Falls is a representative waterfall of Japan located in Akiu Town, Taihaku Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. With a width of approximately 6 meters and a drop of about 55 meters, this straight waterfall's majestic flow has been selected as one of the "One Hundred Famous Waterfalls of Japan" and designated as a national scenic spot. Alongside the Kegon Falls in Tochigi Prefecture and the Nachi Falls in Wakayama Prefecture, it is also counted as one of Japan's "Three Great Waterfalls," and its stunning appearance as it cascades down with a thundering roar is truly impressive.
The area around the waterfall is surrounded by rich trees such as maples, oaks, and other foliage, showcasing different beauties in each of the four seasons: fresh greenery in spring, coolness in summer, colorful autumn leaves, and frozen falls in winter. Particularly from mid-October to early November, the waterfall and the rocky landscapes, adorned with autumn colors, create a vibrant contrast, attracting many tourists.
From the viewing platform, visitors can overlook the entire waterfall, and by descending the maintained path from the Fudo Waterfall Bridge, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes to reach the base of the falls. The mist experienced up close spreads like fog, providing a refreshing chill even in summer, making it feel as though one is taking a natural shower. However, the ground can be slippery, so wearing comfortable shoes and clothing is recommended.
Right near the waterfall stands the "Akiu Great Falls Fudo Shrine," where a large ginkgo tree designated as a preserved tree by Sendai City stands, turning golden in the fall. Additionally, the nearby "Sendai Akiu Great Falls Botanical Garden" hosts around 200 species and 15,000 trees, where visitors can also view the "Sudare Falls."
Access is convenient, being about a 30-minute drive from downtown Sendai. For those using public transportation, buses to Akiu Onsen depart from Sendai Station, with a stop at "Akiu Great Falls," followed by a 20-minute walk to the falls. The ability to stroll while feeling nature's presence is also an appealing aspect. The surrounding area offers attractions such as the Akiu Onsen town, dining establishments, glass workshops, and farms, making it possible to enjoy a blend of sightseeing.
Akiu Great Falls is one of the top scenic spots in Tohoku where you can experience the power of nature and the beauty of the four seasons all at once. Visiting along with a Sendai sightseeing or Akiu Onsen trip allows for a memorable time.
