Detailed Information

Biwako Valley is a mountain resort spread across the Utsumiyama and Horaiyama area in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, at an elevation of around 1,100 meters. From the summit, visitors can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake, making it a popular destination that attracts many tourists throughout the year.
A ropeway takes visitors from the base to the summit in just about five minutes, allowing them to quickly ascend the elevation difference. Through the gondola’s large windows, they can enjoy the view of Lake Biwa gradually unfolding as they rise, making the ride itself a special experience.

What is Biwako Terrace?
Biwako Terrace is an observation facility located in the summit area of Biwako Valley, opening in July 2016. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,100 meters, it is known as a scenic spot where visitors can take in sweeping views of Lake Biwa.
The terrace is broadly divided into three areas: the Main Terrace, the North Terrace, and Café 360. From each area, visitors can enjoy an unobstructed, open view, and its beauty is so striking that it often leaves guests speechless.
The entire facility is designed as a mountain resort, and the wood decks and water features create an atmosphere that feels like a luxury overseas resort.

Features of Each Terrace
Main Terrace (Utsumiyama Summit)
This is the central area of Biwako Terrace. It is characterized by a landscape that seems to unify the water feature, the sky, and Lake Biwa, making it an especially popular photo spot. On the spacious deck, visitors can fully enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of Lake Biwa.

North Terrace
This area has a relatively calm atmosphere and is recommended for those who want to enjoy the scenery at a relaxed pace. With a stronger sense of harmony with nature, it is ideal for those who wish to spend time quietly.

Café 360 (Horaiyama Summit)
This lounge-style terrace café is located at the summit of Horaiyama and can be accessed by lift from Utsumiyama. With a 360-degree panorama, visitors can enjoy not only Lake Biwa but also the surrounding mountains and the expansive sky.
Guests can relax on sofa seats, stretch out their legs, or even lie down and unwind, making it a place to enjoy an extraordinary experience. Drinks, premium sweets, and gelato are also available, and on fine days, the paid premium seats are especially popular.

Seasonal Highlights
Biwako Valley is known as a resort facility that can be enjoyed all year round.

Spring (around April to May)
Because of the elevation difference, about 1,000 cherry trees are said to bloom at different times, allowing visitors to enjoy cherry blossom viewing over an extended period. Trekking and walking among the fresh greenery are also appealing.

Summer
In the cool highland climate, visitors can enjoy activities while fully experiencing nature. This is the season when the blue of Lake Biwa stands out even more beautifully.

Autumn
It is also known as a famous spot for autumn leaves, with the entire mountain turning vivid colors. The contrast between Lake Biwa and the autumn foliage is breathtaking and attracts many visitors.

Winter
Operating as one of the leading ski resorts in the Kansai region, visitors can enjoy skiing and snowboarding. The combination of snowy scenery and views of Lake Biwa is another major attraction.

Activities and Facilities
Biwako Valley offers a wide variety of nature-based activities.

- Zipline (an experience called Sky Walker)
A popular activity where you slide down a wire using a pulley, offering the exhilarating feeling of flying over Lake Biwa.

- Athletic course facilities
Facilities where you can enjoy physical activity on courses set at high elevations.

- Trekking and walking
Visitors can enjoy the scenery of the changing seasons while walking along nature-rich mountain trails.

- Dog run
Visitors can bring their dogs and enjoy the spacious area freely.

- Sasahira Playground (free area)
Equipped with plenty of handmade play equipment, it is popular with families with small children.

There are also cafés and restaurants in the summit area, allowing visitors to relax while enjoying meals and taking a break.
