Detailed Information
Echizen Matsushima Aquarium is an interactive, hands-on aquarium centered on the theme of “see, touch, and learn while having fun.” Packed with a wide variety of attractions that can be enjoyed by everyone from children to adults, its greatest appeal lies not only in viewing the exhibits but also in actually touching and experiencing them.
Inside the aquarium, visitors can enjoy popular attractions such as a powerful dolphin show held every day and a walking event where penguins can be seen up close as they waddle along. In addition, there are adorable seals and otters (Asian small-clawed otters) to observe, as well as opportunities for hands-on interaction.
The interactive exhibits are especially extensive, allowing visitors to touch a wide range of marine creatures directly, including sharks, rays, giant Japanese spider crabs, eels, crabs, shrimp, and doctor fish. Feeding experiences with sea turtles and fish are also available, making the close connection with the animals one of the aquarium’s charms. At the “Mizudako-kan,” visitors can also interact with a giant giant Pacific octopus.
The exhibition spaces are full of creative touches as well. In the coral reef tank at the “Marine Aquarium,” the water surface is glass, and by walking on top of it, visitors can experience the mysterious sensation of floating above the sea. At the “Marine Grand Tank,” guests can watch a dynamic school of sardines swimming together in a spectacular display.
The “Penguin House” is another popular spot, where visitors can observe penguins swimming gracefully like they are flying through the air from an underwater tunnel. In addition, “Penguin Land,” which recreates a natural environment, lets visitors see penguins relaxing freely on spacious land and in pools.
There are also exhibits featuring a diverse range of creatures, including unusual fish such as sunfish, jellyfish, and boxfish, offering many highlights throughout the aquarium. On top of that, the renewed 3D theater provides a more immersive visual experience.
Seasonal events are also abundant. During Golden Week and in summer, special interactive events may be held, such as the “Jabujabu Seawater Pool,” where visitors can swim with fish, “Intertidal Creature Observation Sessions,” night aquarium experiences, and night dolphin shows. There are also advance-reservation hands-on programs and overnight aquarium experiences for groups.
In this way, Echizen Matsushima Aquarium is an appealing aquarium where exhibits, interactions, hands-on experiences, and events come together, offering a place to learn about marine life while having fun.
