Detailed Information
Sumida Aquarium is an urban indoor aquarium located on the 5th and 6th floors of Tokyo Solamachi, in the West Yard of Tokyo Skytree Town®. With the concept of "The closer you get, the more you love it," the aquarium emphasizes the closeness to living creatures, providing a relaxing space that feels like a park. Inside, there are no set pathways, allowing visitors to freely enjoy the exhibits or chat in the café, enabling a personal experience.
At the center of the aquarium is one of Japan's largest indoor open-topped pools, with a water volume of approximately 350 tons, where Magellanic penguins and sea lions reside. This tank is designed with a double-height ceiling, allowing visitors to observe the animals swimming or napping as if they were sharing the same space.
In the "Aqua Base" and "Lab," visitors can observe the caretakers at work and the facilities used for animal care, as well as directly engage with staff about the fascinating creatures. The staff provides detailed stories based on daily observations, including the romance of penguins, battles of pipefish, and secrets of goldfish.
The exhibits are diverse, including the "Ogasawara Big Tank," recreated in collaboration with Ogasawara Village, showcasing the beautiful seas of the Ogasawara Islands. The "Light and Water Nurturing - Coral Reef" features corals transplanted from the seas of Okinawa, allowing a 360-degree viewing experience of the corals. Additionally, the "Big Jar" offers a mesmerizing space filled with about 500 jellyfish, while "Cradle's Chain Part 1 Water's Memory - Jellyfish" displays beautifully mysterious jellyfish in various tank sizes.
The aquarium also features a café with original menus inspired by penguins and a shop stocked with adorable stuffed animals and goods, making souvenir shopping a delight. Workshops and interactive events are held regularly, offering enjoyable activities for both children and adults.
Access is very convenient, as it is located just a short walk from the Tobu Skytree Line's "Tokyo Skytree" station and the "Oshiage (Skytree-mae)" station, which is serviced by multiple lines. It is also within walking distance from the Asakusa area, making it an easy addition to a sightseeing route.
Entry with time-specified web tickets is smooth and convenient. Moreover, for those who want to enjoy the aquarium throughout the year, a cost-effective web annual pass is recommended.
