Detailed Information

Kasai Rinkai Aquarium is a large public aquarium that opened in 1989 within Kasai Rinkai Park in Edogawa City, Tokyo. Designed by the architect Yoshio Taniguchi, known for designing the new building of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, it features a stunning glass dome that stands 30.7 meters high, serving as a landmark. Beneath this dome lies a donut-shaped main tank called "The Voyager of the Ocean," which boasts a water volume of 2,200 tons.

In this tank, visitors can observe a school of formidable bluefin tuna up close, and the viewing area known as the "Aqua Theater" allows for a leisurely appreciation of these magnificent fish. The aquarium displays various marine environments, including "World Oceans" and "Tokyo's Sea," where you can encounter creatures from the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic and Antarctic seas, as well as fish inhabitant of the Ogasawara Islands and Tokyo Bay.

The section "Penguin Ecology" showcases four species of penguins, including Humboldt and king penguins, in one of the largest displays in Japan, allowing visitors to observe both underwater and on land. Displays such as "Forest of Seaweeds" and "Coral Reef Sea" introduce the vegetative life of the ocean and the creatures that dwell within it.

The interactive exhibit "Ikimono Majika" has been designed to allow closer interactions with living organisms, featuring well-equipped observation points and informative panels. Guided tours enable visitors to explore the aquarium alongside knowledgeable staff, providing deeper educational insights.

The outdoor area includes "Nature by the Water's Edge," which recreates traditional waterfront environments in Tokyo, and "Seabird Ecology," where seabirds like the rare tufted puffin live, facilitating nature experiences that go beyond just an aquarium.

Kasai Rinkai Park also features a bird sanctuary, the "Big Ferris Wheel of Diamonds and Flowers," a barbecue area, and a terminal for Tokyo Mizube Line, making it a spot where families can enjoy a full day. With over 1.21 million visitors recorded in 2023, it is one of Japan's most popular aquariums.
