Detailed Information
Kyoto Aquarium is a large, inland aquarium located within Umekoji Park in the Shimogyo Ward of Kyoto City. It is easily accessible from major tourist spots, being approximately a 15-minute walk from JR Kyoto Station or a 7-minute walk from Umekoji-Kyoto-Nishi Station on the JR Sagano Line. Opened in March 2012, it features over 15,000 creatures from around 250 species across 10 exhibition areas.
One of the highlights of the aquarium is the giant salamander, a national special natural monument displayed in the "Kyoto River" area. Known as one of the world's largest amphibians, its impressive appearance combined with its lovely round eyes makes it a favorite among visitors. In a tank that recreates the environment of the Yura River from upstream to downstream, visitors can also observe freshwater fish such as yamame, iwana, and mugitsuku.
In the "Penguin" area, Cape penguins native to Southern Africa live in a spacious exhibit that spans the first and second floors, allowing guests to enjoy their leisurely poses on land as well as their lively swimming in the water. The unique display "Penguin Correlation Chart," which illustrates the relationships among the penguins, has also garnered attention.
The "Kyoto Sea" area features a massive 6-meter tall tank where visitors can observe fish such as sardines, rays, and sharks swimming gracefully in the nearby waters of Kyoto. Benches are provided in front of the tank to allow guests to enjoy a peaceful moment while gazing at the shimmering underwater world.
In 2020, a new exhibition area called "Jellyfish Wonder" opened, showcasing over 30 species and more than 5,000 jellyfish—the largest number in Western Japan. Visitors are amazed by the diverse colors, shapes, and sizes of the jellyfish. Among them, the panoramic tank "GURURI" offers a surreal experience, making it feel as though one is drifting through the sea alongside the jellyfish. Additionally, a comprehensive informational panel titled "Jellyfish Wonder Encyclopedia," filled with the love of the care staff, provides an opportunity for both observation and learning.
In another half-outdoor area, visitors can see lively seals and spotted seals up close, relaxing in tube-shaped tanks and on rocky surfaces. Near the aquarium's exit, there is the "Kyoto Satoyama" area, which features rice fields and gardens with Kyoto vegetables, where visitors can observe the growth of local produce such as Kujo green onions and Shogoin turnips. It's a healing space that realistically recreates the harmonious landscape of nature and the city in Kyoto.
Kyoto Aquarium offers a variety of experiential programs under the concept of "The more you get close, the more you like." These include feeding time events hosted by staff and workshops for young children, all designed to be enjoyable and educational.
With most of the exhibitions indoors, it is a major attraction for those looking for a comfortable experience even on rainy days. The aquarium also features a café and a museum shop, where guests can purchase original Kyoto Aquarium goods and souvenirs.
Kyoto Aquarium is a must-visit spot for tourists in Kyoto, offering experiences of learning and healing for people of all ages, from adults to children.
