Detailed Information
Sasagawa Nagare is a beautiful coastal scenic area along the Sea of Japan, stretching from Hamashimbo (Torigoezan) to Samukawa (Kozakizaki) in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture. The approximately 11-kilometer-long coastline is famous for its crystal-clear blue sea, said to be among the most transparent in Japan, and for its majestic scenery created by strange rock formations and reefs. It has been designated both a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument.
The greatest attraction of Sasagawa Nagare is its varied terrain, formed over many years by the Sea of Japan’s rough waves and erosion. Along the coast, visitors will find unusual rocks, giant boulders, reefs, and caves scattered throughout the area, allowing them to appreciate nature’s powerful artistry up close. The waves flowing and rising between the rocks are a distinctive feature, and it is said that the name “Sasagawa Nagare” comes from the beauty of this landscape.
To fully enjoy the scenery of Sasagawa Nagare, a sightseeing cruise is especially recommended. On the approximately 40-minute boat ride, you can view the strange rock formations and cliffs from the sea, experiencing a sense of grandeur and excitement that differs from what you see on land. Notable sights include “Meganewan Iwa” (Spectacle Rock), with its eye-like hole, and “Kyoryu Iwa” (Dinosaur Rock), which resembles a dinosaur. The ever-changing, unique rock scenery will captivate your attention. During the cruise, there may also be an opportunity to feed the seagulls, and seeing them swoop in close is impressive and popular with families with children.
Since the sightseeing boats can be crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons, boarding in the morning when it is relatively less crowded is recommended. In the evening, some departures offer views of the sunset over the Sea of Japan, making them perfect for those who want to enjoy a romantic landscape. If you want a good seat for the view, it is best to line up early.
For those who prefer to enjoy the scenery from land, the observatory at Meganewan Iwa Coast in the central part of Sasagawa Nagare is also recommended. From here, you can see the powerful Ojishiiwa Rock, and on clear days, you may also be able to glimpse Awashima Island in the distance. With its sweeping view of the dramatic interplay between sea and rocks from an elevated vantage point, it is also an excellent spot for photography.
The surrounding area is also equipped with facilities that are convenient for visitors. The waiting area used before and after boarding includes souvenir shops and restaurants, making it a comfortable place to rest or shop. In addition, the sunset viewed from the Sasagawa Nagare Yuhikaikan, which features a restaurant and local specialty shop, is especially popular and cherished by many as a memorable scenic highlight of the trip.
Sasagawa Nagare is also a place where you can enjoy different charms depending on the season. In summer, the highly transparent sea is beautiful and ideal for swimming and strolling. From spring to autumn, you can enjoy the coastline while feeling the refreshing sea breeze, and in winter, the wild character of the Sea of Japan adds even more drama, allowing you to experience a more powerful kind of natural beauty.
In this way, Sasagawa Nagare is one of Niigata’s most representative coastal scenic destinations, where you can enjoy both the beauty of its clear blue sea and the grand scenery of strange rocks, caves, and more. With sightseeing cruises and observatories among its many attractions, it is a recommended destination for those who want to experience both the power of nature and a sense of relaxation.
