Detailed Information
Kinugawa Onsen is one of the leading hot spring resorts in the Kanto region, located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It stretches along the upper reaches of the Kinugawa River, which flows from north to south through the central part of Tochigi, and is blessed with rich nature and beautiful ravine scenery. The hot spring district extends for about 2 kilometers from Kinugawa-Onsen Station to Kinugawa-Koen Station, with large ryokan inns and hotels lining both banks of the Kinugawa River.
History
The origins of Kinugawa Onsen date back to the Edo period. It is said that a hot spring was discovered in the Taki area on the west bank of the Kinugawa River during the Genroku era (the latter half of the 17th century), and it was called “Taki no Yu.” At that time, it was a prestigious hot spring where only people of limited status, such as monks and feudal lords visiting Nikko Toshogu Shrine, were allowed to bathe.
In the Meiji period, it was opened to the general public and became widely loved as a fine spring said to be effective for neuralgia, rheumatism, and fatigue recovery. Later, in 1927, it was renamed “Kinugawa Onsen,” and when Tobu Railway’s lines were developed in the early Showa period, access by train became possible, leading to rapid growth as a tourist destination.
Furthermore, in 2006, limited express trains “Spacia Kinugawa” and “Nikko,” which run directly from JR Shinjuku Station to Tobu Kinugawa-Onsen Station, began operation, making access from the Tokyo metropolitan area even more convenient.
Spring Quality and Benefits
Kinugawa Onsen has an alkaline simple spring quality. Its colorless, clear, gentle water is characterized by being odorless and tasteless, with little irritation to the skin, and it is also known as a “beauty bath” for the skin. Its main benefits include relief from neuralgia, frozen shoulder, joint pain, fatigue recovery, and overall health promotion. It is loved by many visitors as a hot spring where children and elderly people alike can bathe with peace of mind.
Nature and Sightseeing
The area around Kinugawa Onsen is rich in nature and designated as part of Nikko National Park. Its scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, offering fresh greenery in spring, river scenery in summer, autumn foliage in fall, and snowy landscapes in winter, each season bringing its own charm.
One of the most popular attractions is the Kinugawa River Line Boat Ride. Visitors can board a boat that travels through the ravine and enjoy a roughly 40-minute journey while gazing up close at unusual rock formations and steep cliffs. During the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves, the beauty and grandeur become even more striking.
There are also many theme parks in the surrounding area that are popular with families. Notable examples include Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura, which recreates the streets of the Edo period, and Tobu World Square, which features miniature versions of famous buildings from around the world. In addition, the World Heritage shrines and temples of Nikko are only about 30 minutes away by car, making Kinugawa Onsen an extremely convenient base for sightseeing.
Kinugawa Onsen is a hot spring resort where history, nature, and the blessings of hot springs come together in harmony. While preserving its tradition as a venerable therapeutic hot spring resort dating back to the Edo period, it continues to develop as a modern tourist destination.
With its excellent accessibility and abundant sightseeing attractions, Kinugawa Onsen remains a beloved destination for many people as one of the representative hot spring resorts of the Kanto region.
