Detailed Information

Shinsekai is a vibrant downtown tourist area located in the Ebisuhigashi neighborhood of Naniwa Ward, Osaka. Its origins date back to the 5th National Industrial Exhibition held in 1903 (Meiji 36). In 1912, the first "Tsutenkaku" Tower and the amusement park "Luna Park" were built on the west side of the exhibition site, which led to the establishment of theaters and cinemas, transforming the area into a lively entertainment district.

Today, the legacy of this history remains strong, with Tsutenkaku standing as a symbol of Osaka and a popular tourist spot with its observation deck. The Tsutenkaku Main Street is lined with large puffer fish lanterns, Billiken statues, and giant signboards, creating a picturesque scene perfect for photographs. Additionally, underground is the "Tsutenkaku Theater TENGEKI," which is well-loved as a cultural spot where performances of enka songs, manzai comedy, and Kamigata rakugo are held.

Southeast of Tsutenkaku lies "JanJan Alley," home to about 50 unique establishments including kushikatsu (deep-fried skewered meat) shops, doteyaki (beef sinew stew) restaurants, and go and shogi clubs, all offering a taste of Osaka's gourmet in a retro Showa atmosphere. In particular, kushikatsu is a specialty of Shinsekai, attracting many with its reasonable prices and unique menu options.

Access is convenient, as it is within walking distance from multiple lines such as JR, subway, and Nankai Electric Railway, and is easily reachable from the Tennoji and Namba areas. Since the 2000s, Shinsekai has been re-evaluated as a "Showa Retro Town," sparking renewed popularity as a tourist destination.

Shinsekai, where history, culture, food, and entertainment come together, is a precious area where you can experience the "good old Osaka." When visiting Osaka, be sure to stop by and immerse yourself in its charm.
