Detailed Information

Suzuka Circuit, located in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, is one of Japan’s premier motorsport facilities and also a comprehensive leisure complex where families can have fun together. Completed in 1962, the circuit was Japan’s first full-scale international racing course. Its construction was carried out under the philosophy of Honda founder Soichiro Honda: “Cars don’t get better unless you race them.”

The course stretches 5,807 meters, making it one of the longest circuits in Japan. Its greatest distinguishing feature is its rare figure-eight layout with an overpass, which is unusual even by global standards. The track is highly technical, with a balanced mix of straights, tight corners, and medium- to high-speed turns. In particular, the high-speed slalom section following the S Curves, as well as signature corners such as Degner, Spoon Curve, and 130R, are known as demanding sections that require exceptional skill from drivers and high performance from the cars. For this reason, Suzuka is often described as a “good circuit is a difficult circuit,” and it is highly regarded by drivers around the world.

Since the first Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix was held there in 1987, Suzuka has become recognized as one of the world’s classic, historic circuits. An anecdote in which Sebastian Vettel praised it as “like a course made by God” is also well known. While many modern circuits place greater emphasis on safety and have wide paved runoff areas, Suzuka still retains many gravel traps, making off-track mistakes relatively risky. As a result, winning here requires a highly advanced balance of cornering performance and straight-line speed.

The course is also divided into multiple sections for different uses. In addition to the full circuit, there are the East Course (about 2.3 km), the West Course, and the South Course, where gymkhana and kart events are held, allowing a wide variety of races and competitions to take place. From world-class events such as Formula 1 and the Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race to domestic championships and clubman races, the circuit hosts a broad range of competitions and is known as a major center of Japanese motorsport.

Moreover, Suzuka Circuit is not limited to racing; it also serves as a major amusement destination. The grounds include Motopia, an amusement park with more than 30 attractions, especially rich in activities that let children experience driving for themselves. Through attractions such as Circuit Challenger and Kids Bike Training, visitors can enjoy learning about mobility in a fun and hands-on way.

The facility also includes accommodations, restaurants, a day-use hot spring, and a pool, allowing families to spend the whole day there or stay overnight and relax. On days when races are not being held, visitors can even experience driving on part of the East Course through special programs, giving the general public a chance to enjoy the atmosphere of a real circuit.

In addition, Suzuka has operated its racing school, HRS Suzuka, for over 30 years, producing drivers such as Takuma Sato and Yuki Tsunoda who have gone on to succeed on the world stage. In this way, it has made a major contribution to Japanese motorsport through talent development as well.

Another of Suzuka Circuit’s attractions is its spectators. Many fans have a deep understanding of and passion for motorsport, and during the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix, the drivers are greeted with warm support that is highly praised worldwide.

In this way, Suzuka Circuit is a highly appealing tourist destination that combines one of the world’s most challenging racing courses with facilities that everyone can enjoy. It is a place well worth visiting not only for motorsport fans, but also for families and travelers alike.
