Detailed Information
Kawaguchiko is one of the Fuji Five Lakes, located in the eastern part of Yamanashi Prefecture, and is a nature-rich lake spread across the northern foothills of Mount Fuji. Situated at an elevation of about 830 meters, it is the lowest of the Fuji Five Lakes. Its shoreline stretches for approximately 19 kilometers, the longest among the Fuji Five Lakes, and trails for walking and running are well maintained along the lakeside. When Mount Fuji was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, Kawaguchiko was included as one of its component properties, and it has since become a popular destination visited by many tourists from Japan and abroad.
The greatest appeal of Kawaguchiko is the magnificent view of Mount Fuji seen across the lake. On the calm, almost current-free surface, Mount Fuji is beautifully reflected, creating the dreamlike “upside-down Fuji” view. The lakeside hotel area and the northern shore are especially famous as scenic photo spots, where visitors can enjoy Mount Fuji’s many expressions depending on the weather and time of day. From the mountain bathed in the colors of sunrise and sunset to, on clear nights, Mount Fuji appearing alongside a starry sky, there is always something to admire throughout the day.
Another major feature of the Kawaguchiko area is the chance to enjoy the beauty of nature in every season. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom abundantly along the lakeshore. In early summer, the Kawaguchiko Herb Festival is held, and vast lavender fields in full bloom spread across the area. In autumn, the entire lakeside is wrapped in colorful foliage, and from mid-October to early November, visitors can feel the arrival of fall earlier than in central Tokyo. In particular, the Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival held in mid-November is a major event; at Momiji Corridor in the northern shore area, about 60 maple trees turn vivid shades of red and are illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere. In winter, the snow-capped Mount Fuji and the tranquil lake surface combine to create a clear and beautiful landscape.
The lake is also popular for fishing, including herring, rainbow trout, and black bass, as well as for lake sports such as boating and canoeing. A sightseeing cruise allows visitors to leisurely take in the scenery from the water, offering a perspective different from that on land and fully showcasing the charm of Kawaguchiko. In summer, the Kawaguchiko Lake Festival is held, with about 10,000 fireworks launched over the lake, and the fireworks reflected on the water along with the silhouette of Mount Fuji add brilliant color to the summer night.
Another major attraction of Kawaguchiko is its well-developed tourist facilities. The Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum is a music-themed park featuring one of the world’s largest automatic organs and a beautiful rose garden, making it enjoyable for all generations. At the Kawaguchiko Kitahara Museum, visitors can see nostalgic collections centered on tin toys, and there are also unique facilities such as the Kawaguchiko Sarumawashi Theater and the Yamanashi Gem Museum. In addition, by taking the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Kawaguchiko and Mount Fuji from Mount Tenjo, a place also known as the setting of the folktale “Kachi Kachi Yama.”
There is also a wide variety of hands-on activities. At the Hoto Research Institute, visitors can experience making hoto, a local dish of Yamanashi Prefecture. After learning about the history of hoto, they can try kneading the noodles under professional guidance, making it a perfect way to create travel memories. At Country Lake Systems, outdoor activities that make use of the lake and nature, such as Canadian canoeing and mountain biking, can be enjoyed. Furthermore, at Fujiten Resort, visitors can enjoy outdoor sports such as skiing in winter and a pokkār in summer.
The Kawaguchiko area also has an onsen district, and at the hotels and inns along the lakeshore, guests can spend luxurious moments soaking in hot springs while gazing at Mount Fuji. There is also a wide range of accommodation options, including resort hotels, hot spring inns, cottages, and campgrounds, making it suitable for family trips, couples, and group travel alike.
Accessibility is another attraction of Kawaguchiko. From central Tokyo, it can be reached by car in about an hour and a half via the Chuo Expressway or the Tomei Expressway. By train, it takes about 50 minutes to just under an hour from Otsuki Station on the Fujikyuko Line to Kawaguchiko Station. Highway buses also run from Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Akihabara, Haneda Airport, and other locations, and with frequent services and relatively affordable fares, it is an easy destination to visit.
In this way, Kawaguchiko is a place full of charm, where visitors can enjoy spectacular views of Mount Fuji, seasonal nature, a rich variety of events and activities, and well-developed sightseeing facilities and gourmet experiences all at once. It is one of the representative tourist destinations at the foot of Mount Fuji, recommended not only for sightseeing but also for those seeking relaxation or an active getaway.
