Detailed Information

Shiretoko Goko, located in the central part of the Shiretoko Peninsula in Shari, Hokkaido, is one of the scenic highlights that best represents the UNESCO World Natural Heritage site of Shiretoko. Five lakes lie scattered amid untouched virgin forest, and the waters reflect the Shiretoko mountain range and vast woodlands like a mirror. This serene landscape is often described as a “paradise of the primeval world,” moving visitors deeply with its beauty.

### Enchanting Nature and Wildlife
The area around Shiretoko Goko is a treasure trove of nature, home to a wide variety of wildlife. In addition to Ezo deer, Ezo squirrels, and red foxes, rare birds such as black woodpeckers and white-tailed eagles may also be seen. It is also habitat for brown bears, and you may find claw marks or feeding traces left on the ground. Being able to feel the presence of animals through these signs is one of the unique appeals of Shiretoko Goko.

### Value as a World Natural Heritage Site
In 2005, Shiretoko was registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Shiretoko Goko is one of its core attractions and is also counted among the Eight Views of Shiretoko. The natural environment, with minimal human impact, has been preserved to this day, and it is managed under strict rules to balance tourism and conservation.

### Walking the Area: Elevated Boardwalk and Ground Trails
At Shiretoko Goko, two types of walking trails are available, allowing visitors to choose according to purpose and season.

**Elevated Boardwalk (usually early May to late October)**
This barrier-free wooden boardwalk stretches about 800 meters to the First Lake. Because it is raised above the ground, visitors can safely enjoy the scenery without entering brown bear habitat. From the observatory along the way, sweeping panoramas of the First Lake, the Shiretoko mountain range, and the Sea of Okhotsk unfold, making it easy for anyone to experience nature. It is free to use and accessible by wheelchair and stroller.

**Ground Trails (usually May to late October)**
For those who want a more immersive nature experience, the ground trails are recommended. There are two routes: the **Large Loop** (about 3 km) circling the lakes, and the **Small Loop**, which visits only the First and Second Lakes. You can choose according to the season and your physical condition.

- **May to mid-July (brown bear active season):** participation in a paid nature guide tour is required.
- **Mid-July to late October:** individual use is possible after attending a lecture (video guidance).

### Seasonal Attractions
Shiretoko Goko shows a different face in each season.

- **Spring (May):** skunk cabbage and Ezo Engosaku bloom, and the fresh green forest feels refreshing.
- **Summer (June to August):** lush greenery surrounds the area, and encounters with wildlife are likely.
- **Autumn (September to October):** autumn leaves reflect on the lake surface, creating a painting-like landscape.
- **Winter (November to April):** the regular walking routes are closed, but snowshoe tours through the surrounding forests and wetlands let visitors experience a silent world wrapped in snow.

### Shiretoko Goko Field House and Nearby Facilities
At the **Shiretoko Goko Field House**, the starting point for walks, visitors can receive the lecture (video guide) required for using the ground trails, sign up for guided tours, and obtain the latest brown bear sighting information.

The adjacent rest house offers light meals such as venison burgers and French fries, as well as local sweets like cloudberry and beach rose soft serve ice cream. Please note, however, that food and drinks are not allowed on the trails. The facility is usually closed for winter from early November to late April.

### Access
The most convenient way to reach Shiretoko Goko is by shuttle bus from the Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal, getting off at the “Shiretoko Goko” stop. Access by car is also possible, but parking lots can become crowded during the tourist season, so public transportation or sightseeing taxis are recommended. With a sightseeing taxi, you can efficiently visit this site together with other spots in the Shiretoko Eight Views.

### Environmental Conservation Efforts
In the past, due to a tourism boom, concerns arose about trampling and negative impacts on wildlife at Shiretoko Goko. Since 2011, rules for use have been tightened in an effort to establish a tourism style that coexists with nature. In particular, during seasons when brown bears are frequently sighted, guided tours are mandatory and restrictions are placed on use of the ground trails. Improvements such as the elevated boardwalk have also been made.

Shiretoko Goko is one of Hokkaido’s most spectacular destinations, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur of Shiretoko’s nature up close. Its beautiful scenery of lakes and mountain ranges, encounters with abundant flora and fauna, and walking routes designed to harmonize people and nature make it a place full of thoughtful design. With its many seasonal expressions, Shiretoko Goko offers new inspiration every time you visit.

We invite you to visit Shiretoko Goko, the “paradise of the primeval world,” and enjoy a dialogue with nature.
