Detailed Information
Toyosu Market is one of the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Markets and plays a central role in delivering safe and reliable fresh food to Tokyo residents and many other people. It opened on October 11, 2018, following its relocation from the Tsukiji Market. With trading volumes and transaction values for seafood and produce on a global scale, it has become an important hub supporting Japanese food culture.
Background to the Relocation and the Path to Opening
Before Toyosu Market came into being, Tsukiji Market had supported the food supply of the Tokyo metropolitan area for more than 80 years since the early Showa era. However, due to aging facilities and concerns over sanitation and safety, the idea emerged to develop a new market at a different location rather than rebuilding at the existing site.
After many years of discussion and preparation, the move to Toyosu was officially decided. Following a period of adjustments, including delays to the relocation, Toyosu Market opened on October 11, 2018, taking its first step as a wholesale market for a new era.
Market Layout and Facilities
Toyosu Market is mainly composed of the following three buildings:
Seafood Wholesale Building
Wholesale transactions of seafood, including tuna, take place here, and visitors can safely observe the auctions from a designated viewing corridor. The serious bidding matches conducted by expert buyers begin early in the morning, and their energy is truly impressive.
Seafood Intermediate Wholesale Building
This is where intermediate wholesalers handle fresh fish and shellfish. On the third floor there is a restaurant area, and on the first floor there is a group of retail shops known as “Uogashi Yokocho.” Around 70 shops, including well-known stores from the Tsukiji Market era, gather here, offering carefully selected items such as professional-grade knives, tableware, dried foods, nori seaweed, and more.
Produce Building
Vegetables, fruits, and other produce are traded here, and restaurants open to general visitors operate on the first floor. Visitors can casually enjoy dishes made with fresh ingredients.
In addition, the third floor of the Management Facilities Building houses 13 restaurants, including long-established favorites and popular shops that moved from Tsukiji. As it offers exquisite gourmet dishes such as seafood rice bowls, sushi, and tempura, it is loved by many visitors.
The Appeal of the Viewing Experience
At Toyosu Market, special viewing corridors for general visitors have been prepared, allowing people to observe the market in a safe and comfortable way. One of the most popular attractions is the Tuna Auction Viewing Deck. This requires advance reservation, and visitors can watch the tuna auction, which begins around 5:30 a.m., up close through glass. The lively scene unfolding right before your eyes is well worth seeing.
After the viewing, visitors can enjoy meals made with fresh seafood at restaurants inside the market or shop for related goods and ingredients at Uogashi Yokocho. There are also limited-edition items available only here, making it an excellent place to pick out souvenirs.
Rooftop Green Space and Views
A rooftop green space has been developed on the roof of the Seafood Intermediate Wholesale Building, with a spacious lawn area serving as a relaxing spot for visitors. From here, you can take in panoramic views of Tokyo Bay, the Rainbow Bridge, Odaiba, Tokyo Tower, and more, making it a place where you can unwind in the middle of the city.
Access and Convenience
Toyosu Market is located in Toyosu 6-chome, Koto City, Tokyo, and is highly accessible, just a short walk from Shijo-mae Station on the Yurikamome Line. It is also conveniently connected from central Tokyo, making it an ideal destination for sightseeing and gourmet experiences.
As a core facility supporting Tokyo’s food supply, Toyosu Market offers world-class scale in handling goods, along with hygienic and functional facilities. While inheriting the traditions of Tsukiji, Toyosu Market combines the latest technology with a comfortable viewing environment. It is beloved by a wide range of people, from professional chefs to tourists, and is a place where you can experience the forefront of Japanese food culture.
Enjoy fresh gourmet food and the lively atmosphere of the market, and be sure to experience the charm of Toyosu Market for yourself.
