Aso Shrine
Aso Shrine, located in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is the head shrine of approximately 500 shrines across Japan and has a history of over 2,500 years. The deities enshrined include Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto and other gods, offering various benefits such as protection from misfortune, safety for the home, and academic success. Within its grounds, there are important cultural properties designated as National Important Cultural Properties, including the shrine hall and the ornate gate, which is especially notable at 18 meters tall and is famous as one of Japan's "Three Great Gates." The shrine suffered extensive damage during the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, but restoration and reconstruction were completed in December 2023. Additionally, the shrine's unique horizontal approach and the "Aso Agricultural Festival" are also highlights to experience.
